I could make some progress in my benq firmware research project :). The media codes in this list are extracted from the firmware, the speeds are my best guesses.
To guess the +RW and +DL speeds I need more input. Please post here the selectable burning speeds with these media types. I need to know if 6x burning is available when 8x is available or 6x is the minimal speed and do not know if 1x and 2.4x burning with +R media is supported.

2.4x is mimimum speed.
2.4x is supported with all +R medias.
However, if the media is 8x or faster, 2.4x burn quality can be very bad.

2x burning is not supported.
1x burning is not supported.
Having said that, 2x is not user selectable but is possible within the write strategies.
1x, also not user selectable, will happen on a desperate buffer-underrun condition and still result in a good burn.

For single layer, write once discs, 2x, 6x, 10.3x, 14.5x are not user selectable, but are in some write strategies (media dependent).

The drive’s DVD+R heritage makes 2.4x the lowest user-selectable speed.

Selecting (in software) a speed that does not exist in the inbuilt listing produces a burn on the next highest valid speed.

WOW - it never occurred to me that BenQ’s own media wouldn’t be in the list!

So it’s looking like either the 1620 offers to burn +R media at 8X or higher - or that media gets the :eek: generic 4X burn strategy :eek: . I guess that would be one way to phase out support for some of the older +R media!

Something else odd about the Daxon medias. That AZ2 under T9 firmware is a 10x write strategy when set to 12x or 16x. At least with all of that media that I have.
Just FYI there.

Have you seen my own list extrapolated from BenQ’s marketing information? The “recommended” section at the top of that thread (from just a few weeks ago) has the correct write speeds for most of the medias you’re reviewing.
