Benq 822W vs. NEC 2500A

I have both drives now installed. i have recently bought two sample packs of dvd media from www.accaproducts.com and will post in this thread the scans of identical media on each drive at equal speed settings.

each media will have its media code plus ill include the part no. of the product from accaproducts.

firmware im using on the NEC 2500A is Hacked herries 107 beta 7
firmware on the Benq 822W is stock (since this is such a new product).

speeds will be at maximum allowed for media by fw.

No MCC or Tayio Yuden media came with these packs so it will be mostly under 1$ media.

I will also use some other media i have on hand…some cheap media and some good media for comparisons…(ie cheap CMC 2x and excellent verbatim datalifeplus MCC 8x).

remember this is not a clinical study just a comparison between two simular media on two drives. Also remember that im using the shipping version of Benqs fw and the hacked version of the 2500s…though if you bought these drives im sure you would be using the same…ie real world comparisons.

if you have questions on specific test results reply to the relevent test post.

Tayio yuden dvd+4x burned at 8x took 7.5 min. total burn time.
This media was not obtained at accaproducts.

Burn with booktype set to DVD-ROM on Benq DW822A.
As you can see very excellent results took 7.5 min. to burn at 8x

next post will just be the NEC 2500A result on same media.

outstanding!!

how bout some scans with mediocre or average media? princo?

burn time took about 30 seconds longer than the Benq at 8x

results comparable to benq but overall id give the benq the advantage by a hair.

As stated above this media is burned at 4x but as you can see by the burn results it definately loves this speed for a burn!
took about 12.5 min. to burn…worth another 4 min. from 8x id say so…

bought as Optodisk 4x DVD+R item#1703 at www.accaproducts.com .70 each for spindle of 100.

As you can see the drive will only write these at 4x max. Also the number of PO errors at beginning is rather high…this disk would be marginal at best. I really think the burn would improve buring at a lower speed but since i only have 2 of these i was not able to try. My opinion its a no brainer Prodisc for 5 cents less.

Have you used many of the Prodisc? Someone said they vary in quality.

That would be me. But I did get them from a computer fair (I also noticed that the discs were stuck together and had to pry them apart. Possibly damaged media due to heat/storage issues with the supplier).

Perhaps if I had bought from someone like SVP it would have been a different storry.

Mind you I burned a Verbatim MCC the other day @ 8x and it failed during the acutal burn using Herrie’s B7 firmware on the NEC 2500. Was the last disc on a spindle of 10.

Who knows. Just unlucky that time? Shrugs.

Well Oddball are you Deadman on the firmware rpc1.org forum? That’s where I got it.

Warning on those Bulkpaq DVD+R’s (Prodsic R02). The quality seems to be variable. My first spindle I tried a few discs from the top and tested @ 8x, 6x and 4x and all failed with read errors near the end of the disc (Using beta 7). Tried the second spindle (2 discs from the middle of the spindle) and they burned perfectly.

So carefull since those discs can be anything from amazing to the worst media on earth.

I’d be interested to see some speed test scans from those 2.4x rated. Especially @ 8x. Can you do a Nero CD Speed test for us and an error scan then post the images here? Or use DVDInfoPro which has the same options.

Hi Jamos,
Thank you for this results.

But, I waaaaaaaant to buy a dvd burner, What is the better to buy?
O.K, What is the best burner quality now?? BenQ DW822A or NEC 2500 ??
What about the speed? Do you think the BenQ DW822A can burn at high speed when I use Ritek media??

About the media, I am always hearing the prodisc is bad!!
and you said (I like prodisc better more reliable and cheaper )!!
Is it better than Ritek??

Okey, About the prodisc media, When I use it, Is it will be live with me for a long time?? Or only year and go to broke?

Thank uou very much
Doctor Aziz

And do you think the BenQ DW822A will be upgradable to burn @ 8x -R??

Thank you
Doctor Aziz

After seeing the results from the benq i was not impressed with this media. Ive seen better results on this media and worse…id say this media varies in quality.

Deciding to burn at 8x seems to have created even higher error counts. but the pattern is consistent with the other test above. rating poor. (note: ive seen good results with this media and the nec with 106 stock firmware at 4x not sure if this is a firmware issue or more likely varying media quality.)

Second note: after looking at the bottom of these disks i see alot of imperfections in the dye coating that im sure are causing the errors. I will be getting a second shipment of these in and will retest later to see if its just a fluke.
