BenQ 1655 problem

I have had the 1655 for about 6 months and it has been great. Lately the drive has decided to not show up as a DVD burner in my third party programs. I have tried Nero and it keeps asking for a CD when I try to burn a DVD. I had the latest FW (BCIB), and I thought it might be the problem, so I went back to BCHB and it is still having the problem. The drive shows up in My Computer as a DVD-RW drive and Nero tells me that it is a DVD burner, but it won’t work. Is there anything else I can try? It reads discs just fine. Thanks for any input.

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, BenQs have a reputation for sudden death. It is possible that the molex power connector is the problem as BenQs also have a reputation for needing a good power connection. You could also check the 80 wire cable but I doubt that it is the problem. Other than that, you might be out of luck.

Fortunately, you are under warranty. Here is their number (866) 600-2367

You could try installing a new ASPI layer see here http://www.mdgx.com/ and look at the XP tweaks and the fix “GET BACK YOUR CD/DVD” or you can check this article out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883523/en-us it applies to DVD writers as well. I found it fixed all my issues when I installed the Microsoft hotfix.

Aspi is for Win95. On NT 5.x absolutely unnecessary.

Are you spamming? You posted the same in http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.php?p=1695777&postcount=8 :cop:

Did you READ the article AND the problem described here carefully? I doubt that. That MSKB article is about issues with IMAPI service only. CD/DVD burning applications are not affected.

Try this.

Also, have you recently upgraded any drivers on your system (motherboard/IDE drivers for example)?

@vwloser, uninstall Nero InCD if installed and any emulation software like Alcohol, Daemon tools.
If this doesn’t help, try the drive in other compu before even considering RMA.
Real BenQ drives are hard to find nowdays.

Congrats to your 2,5k posts mciahel, although your post would be better spent helping OP out.

Just to clarify member chas0039 statement a little.
He is refering to BenQ DW1620 and high failure/RMA rate with a limited batch two years back, caused by a bad electronic component.

Just to add a personel dimension. My DW1620 is made in same timeframe as the “bad” ones, burned 400+ discs but still burning without issues.

Thanks for all of your help. I forgot to say that I haven’t updated any drivers lately. I found out today, that I can burn a data DVD in Nero without any problems. I don’t know what has changed. I even tried reinstalling Apollo DVD copy, but it still doesn’t see my recorder.

I don’t have Nero InCD installed. I will just have to see what I can do from now on.

Thanks again for your help.

 Happy to see your burner is working (although I never thought otherwise).

It’s always a good idea to read that burning apps FAQ.
Questions like; “Can other software conflict with the operation of Apollo DVD Copy?” can be worth reading.

In addition you could try with disabling windows xp built in cd burning engine, this ofcourse only when using xp (search/google for details). It shouldn’t interfere with “Apollo” app, but you never know.

BTW, the best way to create working movie backups is to use DVDShrink + RipIt4Me + ImgBurn. And best of all, these apps are for free. Donate if you like them!
