BenQ 1650

As far as I can remember it was scheduled for Januari 2005.
With only a few days until 2005, does anyone know when it’s coming or knows if it’s been delayed?

"Un"official specs 1650: DVD±R = 16x, DVD±RW = 8x, DVD+R DL = 4x, SATA propably also DVD-R DL = 4x but can’t find that info anywhere.

#2

include dvd-ram in…maybe…

#3

may get a set soon…i hope…but jan2005 is too early…most probably feb2005…

#4

Oh man, you had to post this the day after my 1620 shipped… :a

#5

welll…chances are it is a totally new drive…not similar to the 1620 in terms of circuitry and PUH…

#6

Hope we can cross flash from 1620 to 1650

Oh well, I’m pretty bored with both my 1620 anyway… because it never gives me a coaster… :iagree:

#7

dame i want to see what 1650 can do lo

#8

No coasters here either with my two DW1620s. Isn’t it rough for us BenQ owners?

#9

I only got my 1620 today! :frowning:

#10

Well considering the disappointment that NEC fanboys are feeling after seeing scans from the new 3520, who knows whether or not the 1650 will be good?

#11

Whats known about the 1650 is that it will be a SATA drive (1630/40 will be EIDE version) it will have following specs

16x +R and -R
8x +RW -RWw ,
4x +R DL.

I also assume it will have -R DL writing capability now that the specification has been approved.

#12

So no 18x ±Rs and DVD-RAM?

#13

I thought the phisical limit for DVD was 16x, so 16x is as fast as it will ever get.

Ben

#14

I think 17x is possible, as shown by the Plextor PX-716A.

1x DVD ~= 3x CD, rotationally.
Thus, 16x DVD ~= 48x
17x DVD ~= 51x. Since CD-rewriters peaked @ 52x, 17x should be physically possible.

#15

There has not been a word about the 1650 since June so much has likely happened since then, both regarding the release time and the specs. You can probably forget 8x DVD-RW for example as DVD-RW recently got to 6x. On the other hand you might see 8x DVD+R DL in Philips-BenQ’s next model because I’m sure Philips want to beat the 4x DVD-R DL speed as soon as possible  The specs for 8x DVD+R DL seems to be somewhat delayed though, they were supposed to have been finalized by the end of this year.

#16

We could see 12x DVD+RW perhaps even though their is no such media round this story on the front page has this company working with Philips and it mentions that their latest PDIC supports up to 12x DVD+RW so BenQ/Philips might be working on that.
http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/11126

If you check the PDF on their site it mentions 16x DVD+RW but thats probably a firmware upgrade down the round…

Sweet to hear the 1650 will be a SATA drive…

To zevia: you’re bored with your 1620’s!

I’ll be interested in picking up some of the new S-ATA DVD Burners. All of my drives are still IDE - including hard drives so after reading about this maybe I won’t be so anxious to convert over to S-ATA hard drives. Might just add in 2 S-ATA DVD-Burners once they become available instead and get two really freaking big IDE hard drives. hehe

#20

Maybe it’s possible, but who cares? Seriously. 16x DVD burners only beat 8x burners by two minutes (6 versus 8). What would a 17x or 18x burner save, ten or fifteen seconds? Geez. Grins…
