(PS: I read the faq and searched the forum)
Just got a brand new 1640 and loaded FW=BSKB. Rebooted and went burning with nice results. (small test with older fw showed same result)
However: there is one catch: sometimes the Benq is a very slow reader of pressed DVD's!
I tested with Nero CD-DVD speed v4.01. My DVD reader is Pioneer DVD-106S FW=1.22. For some pressed DVD’s the difference in reading speed ridiculous. Of course DMA settings are fine (burst rate of 23MB/s and also: some pressed DVD’s are read very well by the BenQ).
Please find some graphs (restricted to first GB) of the same pressed DVD (Spirited Away, Duallayer) which read slow in the Benq and fast in the Pio. Another pressed DVD is also shown which reads OK with both drives (Kiki’s Delivery Service, Duallayer).
Please note (bizarre) that the Benq reads much faster while in Disk Quality mode than in Benchmark mode!? Unfortunately, programs like DVDshrink are as slow as the Benchmark mode…
The Pio graph shows a better and reasonable average speed in Benchmark mode.
Clearly the problem lies in the individual DVD’s.
* Is it a known fact that some pressed DVD can pose such a difference?
* Does this phenomenon occur with other people?
* Why is reading speed while in Disk Quality mode better than in Benchmark mode with some DVD’s?
Graphs, all pressed DVD’s, only tested for the first GB:
Graph 1. Benq/Spirited: Reasonable quality, speed moderate, starts at ~4x
Graph 2. Benq/Spirited: Extremely slow reading, starts at 1,58x!
Graph 3. Pio /Spirited: Much faster than Benq, starts at 3.23x
Graph 4. Benq/Kiki: Reads nice, starts at 5x
Graph 5. Pio /Kiki: Reads nice, starts at 4.95x
Graph 6. Benq/Unforgiven: Slow, starts at 1.71x
Graph 7. Pio /Unforgiven: OK, starts at 4.11x
