Benq 1640 only burn CD-R's at 16x

I just took one back and exchanged it for this one because it was doing the same thing when I burn a cd it only has 12x and 16x in the drop down list to select in options on Nero 6 and Roxio 7.5 or 8 when I put the same disc in my other drive which is a Benq 1620 then it has everything from 4x to 48x but my 1640 will only show 12x and 16x I though something was wrong with the other one so I returned it and got a new one but I have the same problem anyone else ever have this problem?

What is the CD’s media code? You can use Disc Info in Nero CD-DVD Speed to check the code.

Hmm, that’s strange. I have the same Verbatim CMC Magnetics 97m26s66f and the 1640 can burn them up to 48x. What is your 1640 firmware?

Right now it’s the one that came with the drive I have’nt flashed it yet BSGB the one I took back had BSMB and it did the same thing only showed up to 16x

wonder if I need to install ASPI Drivers or something?

Ok here is some other media I tried but same thing with record speeds

BSGB is a very old firmware. I would suggest to flash with BSLB (or BSMB) so we are in the same page.

Here’s a Verbatim 48x CD-R with CMC Magnetics code.

Wait a minute. Are you sure that your CMC Magnetics CD-Rs is 48x? Let’s compare:

They are different! But I see that your 1620 shows 48x… hmm…

Yes mine are 48x. But it does’nt matter what type CD’s I put in the drive will only show 12x and 16x speeds ant that’s all it will record at that’s the problem DVD’s 16x all day long but CD’s the fastest it will do is 16 and 12x

Well I fixed it lol… Those must have been a bad batch or something because I went back to Circuitcity and exchanged the 1640 for the 1620 like I allready had now I have 2 of them and it works!!!

Ya know, when burning cd’s your better off at 16x or around that, to keep the error rate low and the jitter. The burning time difference is only like 1-2 minutes (or less) :stuck_out_tongue: Better quality is worth the wait.

You exchanged the 1640 with a 1620? Oh my…

Hi
Jumped the gun. New f/w out now. See here.
