Benq 1640 is no good according to Digit India!

Just saw the Digit 2006 copy at a friends place and they had a DVD burner comparison. The drives tested were

Asus DRW-1608P2s
Benq DW 1625 and DW 1640 (which according to digit are quite old drives)
Gigabyte GO-W1623A
LG GSA-4167B
Lite-On SHW-1635S , SHW-16H55 , SHM-165R6S
Plextor PX-740A , PX716A
Samsung SH-W162
Sony DRU 810A

Now this is what digit has to say about the Benq 1640

 1. It is a UDMA-2 drive however the DRU 810A is a UDMA-3 drive!
 2. DRU 810A can burn DVD-R DL but the 1640 cant
 3. The 1640 takes 952 sec to burn an assorted DVD-R disc (Moser Baer 8x DVD-R)
 4. The build quality of the 810a is better than the 1640
 5. Benq 1640 costs Rs 4700(thats 59.5 quid or $104) while the Sony DRU 810A costs Rs 2900 (thats 36.7 quid or $64)

The winner was the Lite-On SHM-165P653

The actual costs of the drives are Benq 1640 was Rs2800($62 or 35 quid)now the Benq 1650 is availlable for the same price
And the Sony DRU 810A was available for Rs 3100($69 or 39 quid) now however only the Sony DRU 820A is avaible for i dont know the price

Why do these fools publish stuff before doing their homework!! :a :a

Maybe their sample drive and media is not good?
952 seconds is around 15 minutes, looks like 4x burn.

Well the media used was Moser Baer DVD-R 8x… all the other drives managed in abt avg 510 sec.

BTW is was the Digit Feb 2006 issue

Those morons also quote the following

“A point to note is that though most burner can burn DVD’s at 16x , this media is not easily available in the Indian markets even now and even if it is the costs are prohibitive. Therefore we used the more commonly available and more affordable 8x media to compare the drives”

Moser Baer DVD+R n DVD-R 16x media is available everywhere i know and each disc costs anywhere between Rs20 to Rs 25($0.45 to $0.55)
Even Sony DVD+R 16x is available at around the same price.

“In fact neither Benq models can be called new ; they’ve been around for a while.Thats’s also the reason why neither of them support the DVD-R DL standard”

Morons didnt even look at the box in which the 1640 came…let alone goin thru the trouble to check via Nero InfTool… :a :a

Well the media used was Moser Baer DVD-R 8x… all the other drives managed in abt avg 510 sec.
Takes me about 8.xx min for a full burn on Moser Baer DVD-R 8x. Used an entire spindle. None of them took 15 min. I could get (good quality) fast burns on the same media using OverSpeed.
"A point to note is that though most burner can burn DVD’s at 16x , this media is not easily available in the Indian markets even now and even if it is the costs are prohibitive. Therefore we used the more commonly available and more affordable 8x media to compare the drives"
In fact Moser Baer 8x media is hard to find now. 16x is available everywhere.
"In fact neither Benq models can be called new ; they’ve been around for a while.Thats’s also the reason why neither of them support the DVD-R DL standard"
Unf***ingbelievable

Sony must be giving them a lot of ad revenue by the looks of it  Somebody ought to tell those geniuses that both 810 and 820 are BenQ OEMs.

Digit India is no good according to Scoobiedoobie!

You are asking too much. They are journalists. As such, they do not require education in any particular subject.

Here’s a digit for Digit India to consider, for insulting our darling, precious, dearly loved DW1640.

:iagree: Eh, you go bruddah!!!

Eh he he… .good one! Digit journos here are idiots.'Nuff said, maybe we ought to link them one of the 1640 threads over here?

I think you guys are taking this negative review waaaaay too seriously!

Lighten up - everyone is entitled to their own opinions, even if they differ from your own, and even if you really really disagree.

I don’t care about what any random review thinks of hardware I already own (and I’m happy with my BenQ 1655 as well as most other drives). The only point at which a review is important to mee, is when I’m considering buying something new.

I put very little or no trust in reviews unless I alread know and respect the publication it appears in. Having never heard of Digit India before this, I wouldn’t really care whether they review the BenQ 1640 as the worlds worst drive or the worlds best drive.

If you happen to respect Digit India, but you think this review is factually wrong, then you might consider letting them know how you feel (without resorting to using your middle finger).

If you just loooove your BenQ 1640, you can keep on loving it regardless of what anyone else thinks - although I don’t quite understand the kind of emotion you seem to attach to a mere piece of hardware. :flower:

And you call yourself a CD Freak? For shame!

I have to agree with DrageMester PC and most other magazines are here for only one thing and that is to make Money $$$$ and advertising plays a very big part in there profit margin. It’s only natural to give the best reviews to the products and companies that spend the most on advertising in the magazine! (If you look carefuly the product or the company with the best review always has a few full page adds the same time the review Is published  ) They are not stupid and risk losing advertising $$$ by rubbishing a companies product if it is spending lots of $$$$ in advertising. Reviews should only be take as a reference on the Product Specification and the buyer should make up his or hers mind on how good the product is and what is best suited for there needs, and not by some review that may have already been predetermined before it even started based on the amount of $$$$ spent on the advertising

^^The magazine also mentions wrong specs!! and makes false claims…thats totally bogus and unacceptable

moserbaer branded 8x dvd-r media has fujifilm03 media code in india and i have used many of this. it is really a poor media and neither my liteon 1653s nor my benq 1640 burn them well except disabled wopc in qsuit for benq.

Yeah, well, my 1640 can do this:
SB off/WOPC off/12X burn
