BenQ 1640 - DVD player pays no attention to bit set

Player is a BenQ 1640 with a very recent firmware. Used QSuite to set book type to DVD-ROM for DVD+R discs.

Used Nero 6.6 to burn DVD+R discs … log displayed right before burning starts … confirms that its setting Book Type to DVD-ROM

Inserted burned disc into standalone player … but is identified as DVD+R disc.

What gives ?

I have had this problem since I bought the 1640 … and during the last few weeks I burned a bunch of test discs by tweaking the configuration … and I can confirm that I have this one DVD+R disc that shows up as a DVD-ROM disc in the player. So I know that the player is capable of interpreting the book type if done right. But alas, I just dont remember what I had done to make it work correctly. Its not working any more.

All the DVD+R discs are the same Memorex 8X brand … so its not the disc … since one of them is working as expected.

Any advice ?

Thanks.

Max

try setting it with Nero!

Yes … Nero 6.6 has that option and it IS set for DVD-ROM

I didn’t know that a standalone can identify booktype? Does it play?

Check the disc with Nero CD-DVD Speed - Extra - Bitsetting. In the Disc Setting section, it should show:

  • Current disc type: DVD+R
  • Current book type: ??

Which standalone player gives information about the booktype of the inserted disk? And there is a difference between Disk Type and Book Type. Only the last can be changed by user.

My suggestion:

try to check an burned DVD+R Disk with ImgBurn in your Benq 1640.
A single layer DVD+R disk with booktypesetting DVD-ROM gives the following output:

PHILIPS DVDR1648P1 P2.2 (ATA)
Current Profile: DVD+R

Disc Information:
Status: Complete
Erasable: No

You see, only the Physical Format Information is setting to DVD-ROM.
With Nero CD-DVD Speed gives the tab “Disk Info” this output:

Nero CD-DVD Speed: Disc Info
Grundlegende Informationen
Disktyp: : DVD+R
Book Type : DVD-ROM
Hersteller: : Verbatim
MID : MCC 003 (000)

Please, compare this with your drive.

For starters the standalone recorder/player is a Philips DVDR885. When the disc is inserted the front display shows DVD or DVD+R or DVD+RW etc. Yes it does show DVD for my 8X Memorex DVD+R discs … please read …

When I record on 16X Memorex DVD+R, the player displays DVD+R. It does play but I wanted to make sure that these discs will be recognized any other player I might purchase.

Here is the output from Nero CD-DVD Speed for the 16X media:

The 8X Memorex media that has been recorded the same way … the player shows it as a DVD disc (not a DVD+R). Again, it does play.

The Booktype-Setting function of your burner is ok.
Your Standalone-Player does more than reading the booktype to analyze the disk.
That is ok and not a problem. Booktype Setting is not 100% warranty that a burned DVD on older players functions.

Amen! My trusty Apex AD-1500 balks at playing DVD+R regardless of book type, but will usually recognize the disc after several attempts. But I’ve never gotten it to recognize a DVD+RW set to book type DVD-ROM. I’ve given up trying.

I experimented some more (BTW … its a Philips DVDR985 recorder … not a 885).

One of the Memorex 8X DVD+R that I had recorded on a while back … is shown as a DVD-ROM by the player. The ones I recently burnt (from the same Memorex 8X DVD+R blanks batch) always shows up as DVD+R … so I know that the player is capable of reading the book type.

So now the question is how I can read the raw data on the disc to find out the difference in the headers (the section that has the book type flag)

Thanks.
