BEFB firmware on a DW1640

I’d like to know more about using the BEFB firmware with my BenQ DD DW1640. Currently, I’m using the BSLB firmware as I primarily use the drive for scanning, and writing DVD+R SL media, I burn most everything else on my NEC/Optiarc 7203.

First of all, is it universally accepted by most here, that using the BEFB external firmware is better than using the BSLB internal version? Are there any drawbacks?

Secondly, it looks like a crossflash operation from the pics I’ve seen, crossflashing from DW 1640 to EW 164B. Does that mean I would need to use the BQflasher tool?

You get UDMA4 instead of UDMA2 thats the only difference. This makes it easier for the burner to work with IDE/USB bridges. For internal operation imho it makes no difference.

Yes.
