BD-R compatibility & LG GBW-H10N firmware upgrade

Hi,

I have been using Toast 8 to burn Blu-ray ISOs to single layer BD-Rs for nearly 2 years now. I have used Sony, TDK, Panasonic and other media with no issues. I just got some Traxdata inkjet printable BD-R 25 media and hit my first snag. It looks like they aren’t compatible. Toast gives a buffer error and fails to write. Unfortunately I bought a lot of these BD-Rs. I really didn’t know there were compatibility issues, (a la DVD-R in the 90’s), and I had hoped my LG GBW-H10N would last me a bit longer.

I have the GBW-H10N burner in an intel Mac Pro and the firmware is GL02. I have found firmware upgrades but only for PC. I would be very grateful if anyone can tell me if I can in fact upgrade the firmware, (maybe using Boot camp), and if I do will these Traxdata discs be usable with my set-up (GBW-H10N, Toast 8, Intel Mac Pro)?

The vender offers me Moser Baer BD-R 25s as a replacement. Will I have the same issues with those? I can’t find info or compatibility tables for them.

Thanks very much for any help. Harold.

Please check the Manufacturing ID from Toast, from menu Recorder choose Disc Info, and post it here.

Latest firmware for GBW-H10N is GL06 but it was dated nearly 2 years ago (mid 2007) so not sure updating firmware will help you, but you can always try. If it doesnt help, Moser Baer media will be no good for you too. I’d suggest you go back with the good old Verbatim, Sony, TDK and Panasonic.

What is the media code of your Traxdata disks ?

Hi,

Thanks for the quick replies, The discs ID is RITEKBR2

I am the proud owner of 5 x 10 spindles!

Bad luck, they are not supported in GL06.

Okay. Rats. Are Moser Baer 25GB media likely to be the same kind of disc or is it difficult to guess without the actual disc?

One last question. The vendor who sold me these says on his site “The disc complies with BD-R Specification Version 1.1”. What does that mean?

And thanks for all your help…

May i ask another question. I have the same burner, which mediacodes for BD support in GL06? ( MediaCodeSpeedEdit dont show codes for BD).

Just the first 6 characters of each MID are clear text readable

ala42 thanks ,this information is very useful. Little strange presents of BD-RE DL and BD-R DL, this burner dont support them.

ala42 again thanks for your help. I wonder if the LG GBW-H10N might be compatible with more discs than the table indicates? I have burned fine with TDK BD-R and BD-RE which have an ID not close to anything in the table. I am assuming the IDs are correct here http://www.blu-raydisc.info/licensee_info.php

Maybe I’m just dreaming that the 06 upgrade will work for me. Even so I need to jump some hurdles to upgrade the LG inside a Mac… Is there a complete compatibility table of media vs hardware? It would seem like a good idea.

Usually drives use a default strategy when a MID is not in the table. The small table seems to be complete, as the much longer GGW-H20L BD table is located in the same memory area.
Upgrading to the GL06 firmware is still a good idea.

Traxdata offer a nice table for their discs:

I wish Moser Baer offered the same info

This info from russian DVD/BD maker Mirex. Table in russian but all understand without translation

At least ask your vendor what is the burning speed of the Moser Baer. If it’s 2x BD-R you have 50% chance that it will work.

Moser Baer 2x BD-R can have MID of PHILIP R02 or MBI R02. From ala42 table there is “PHILIP ----” in BD-R list (but no MBI—).

Thanks kawaponga, that is a useful table, thanks zaina and thanks ala42 again. The Moser Baer I can get are X4 so I would have a chance. I am trying to get an actual disc ID from the vender. However I will keep my 50 Traxdata and have started burning them on a colleagues PC, using an H20N.

I will be more careful in the future. I learnt a lot!
