I'm hoping someone will have some insight into my problem. I have had my 2500A for a little while and had no problems. However last night I was burning a DVD and noticed my system was crawling. It took it 15 mins to get halfway through the burn. So I checked my DMA settings on the secondary channel and saw that I was now in PIO Mode (With DMA if available).
Backtracking a bit, this weekend I bought and installed a 160G hardrive and a Sony DDU1612 (rebadged Lite On 166S) for ripping/scanning. So now I have the following IDE config:
Primary Master: HD #1
Primary Slave: New HD #2
Secondary Master: NEC 2500A
Secondary Slave: Sony DDU1612
Somewhere after these changes the PIO mode went into effect. I have done a multitude of changes to try to narrow it down. At first the Sony was in DMA mode. I disconnected it but the NEC stayed unchanged. Added the Sony back and now it says PIO mode also. According to MS http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx it may go into PIO when there are repeated errors. I am thinking that perhaps the IDE ribbon is acting up after I added everything. Any thoughts?
Also, I am running Win XP home, 2.5Ghz Intel, 1Gig RAM.
