Bad luck burning DVD with TS-L532R

Hi,
I am owing a HP Pavllion Laptop which came with TS-L532R Combo DVD ± R Writer. I have been not able to burn a single perfect DVD with it. I have used Record Now (OEM) and Nero and used Intex DVD+R(4X), Samsung DVD-R(8x) and Amkette DVD-R(4X) Media.

I am able to burn CD’s perfectly with the drive though.

First I tried to burn couple of Intex DVD+R (DATA DVD) with Record Now and during burning process i used to get error so I thught media might be a problem, so, i thought of changing media.

Than I bought couple of Samsung Pleomax DVD -R 8X media. And I used Record Now to burn the files (DATA DVD) and the burned process completed successfully. Then I tried to copy the files back to my HDD to check whether they were copied correctly. Some of the files got copied correctly and in some of them I was getting CRC error. So, now I thought software was the problem. So, I download Nero 7 Premium.

Than I tried to burn another Samsung media in Nero Express using speed as 4X and data verification tool on. The burning process was completed sucessfully, but the data verfication failed on the DVD. I used Nero Scan tool too on it and 99.1 % good, 0.7 % Damaged and 0.1% Bad sectors. I tried to copy the files to my HDD and out of 24 files, i was not able to copy 6 files.

Than i thought of trying another media, So i bought amkette DVD-R 4X and tried buring it at 2X (Thought slower the better) with Nero Express. The burning went smoothly. This time I turned off the verification feature (Just in case). Than I run Nero Scan tool and again I had bad sectors…

So, is it common on a DVD to have bad sector, or there is a problem with my drive? I have the Nero Log File and the screen shot of the DVD scan if any one wants it. Please advise, help needed…

Hello!

I say: Buy good media. Samsung-media is from Optodisc and not good, the -R is real bad media.

Try some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim Advanced Azo

Hi everyone.

I have this same problem on my pavilion. It’s not the media. I have used TDK’s TTG01 and TTG02, these are DVD-R. These medias are acceptable medias. I have burned good copies as well in the beginning. Now i can’t get a single good copy.

I called Tech Support today and they tell me that I have to try burning it with the default burner on windows XP. Ummm…windows xp doesn’t have a default dvd burning program. It can burn CDs but not DVDs. Anyways…after that they want me to format my computer and install a fresh copy of windows and then try again…which is by far the last thing i will do.

The drive is the problem. Nero only lets me burn at 4x…even though it’s an 8x burner (yes with 8x media) and the file is not corrupt from my computer because i’ve burned the same content and sometimes it other files that are burned wrong.

The worse thing is…is that this drive is built into the laptop so if they were to ever give us a new drive…we have to send in our laptops.

I do only have experience with the TS-L532A, but media suport etc may be similar.

This are my results

Good:
CMC.MAG.E01
TYG02
YUDEN000T02
Prodisc.R03
MCC02RG20
MCC003

Bad:
Ritek.R03
RitekG05
ProdiscF01
TTG02
Sony.D11
Most 4x media
Most 16x media
Most cheapo media with unknown/rare media codes
Optodisc.R008
Optodisc.OR8

are you serious…you’ve had problems with TTG02?

Man…I bought a 50 pack spindle of these. I’ll try the TYG disks next. But it looks like we can only purchase those online. Anyone know of a store I can go and get a quick 25 or 10 pack?

Many stores still stock verbatim 8x - you may give that a try.

TTG02 - supported at 4x only.

And as you could see it creates two bad error spikes in the beginning of the disc making the disc unreadable by all drives.

This is a comoon issue with the samsung/toshiba 8x laptop DVD-Writers - don’t use media that is only supported at 4x. Use qality media that is supported at 8x ONLY!

Sometimes i get a decent copy where you can copy all the files back over to the hdd but many times i have errors in the middle. The media is an 8x media. But nero will only burn at 4x. I can read and ScanDisk at 8x. I’m a little confused.

How were you able to do that Disk Quality test? It’s grayed out when I click on that tab. I can only do a ScanDisk test. I read somewhere that to run it the drive has to be able to. Is there any other software that I can use? On the ScanDisk test I get quite a few yellow and sometimes a lot of red. As long as there is no red…the disk can be copied back to the hdd but with the yellow…i have problems playing them (video files) off the dvd.

Guess I’ll go try some verbatim 8x media. Do you know what the package is suppose to look like or any markings so i can tell?

Thanks so much for the help.

Any verbatim with Advanced AZO marking should do well.

As you see I used another drive for doing the quality testing

This means MCC and TY?

Yep.

Guys looks like the media isnt the problem,

I got a new sony media and tried on it too,

Please advise what to do… is it my drive now…
On the sony disk it was written made in Taiwan, Could it be pirated SONY disk?

No, Sony don´t manufacture itself. The Taiwan-Sony are made by Daxon.

This is good media, but I know that only the newest Samsung-drives are able to write DVD-R in good quality, all other Samsung are horrible.

Try some Verbatim, like OC-Freak said

Finally, a disc that works. I was able to burn a HP 4x DVD+RW(Made by moser baer, india) with nero. But it took almost 3 hrs (looks like RW takes a lot more time than a +/-R disc) to burn a RW at 4X. The nero reported a single error (verification) but I was able to copy all the data files to my HDD back. But still havent had any good luck burning any +/-R DVD disc that works. So, looks like the drive isnt the problem. There is a problem somewhere else. My laptop is still under warranty, should i get my drive replaced, of should i look for more +/-R brand disk?

Another thing, the “DMA if avaiable” option is switched on both my primary and Secondary IDE, but for the secondary IDE, it sometimes set the current mode to PIO , and sometimes to DMA mode, WHY?

Sorry, but Verbatim or TY brand is not widely available in India, so are there any other good brands.

Looks like a driver problem, do you have the newest driver installed?

I don’t think there are new drivers/firmware for this model. I checked the samsung website and got nothing.

I went out the other day and bought some sony 8x dvd-r (SONY08D1). The 50 pack was made in Japan so I decided to give it a try. They also had the 25 pack, same package, but made in Taiwan. I picked both of them up to see which one would be better. Near the center by the hub on the Japan made one had the code DRMxxxxxx.

I’ve burned 3 DVDs of 4.35gigs of anime (avi files) one at 8x, two at 4x. Because I can’t do a DiskQuality check, I did the ScanDisk on all of them. Here’s the outcome so far…

The 8x burn:
-it gave me one red spot right smack in the middle. I tried to copy the file back and it gave me an error.
-it also had some yellow marks about 6-10 scattered ones. A few concentrated around the red mark but the rest kind of scattered.

The 4x burn:
-it gave me a few (3-6) yellow marks scattered around. Everything copies back but the files with the yellow mark had playback errors. I’ve played these files on another computer and they play fine. This drive might have problems reading back files.

I also noticed that that first yellow mark is always there. When I read at 8x or maximum I get two yellow marks towards the beginning. These marks are on all my burns in the same exact location. I don’t know why…just thought I’d note.

I have some more stuff to burn so I’ll keep posted.

At last there’s a discussion about this problem! I reported it a long time ago on a different thread (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=138452), but only peaceout530 responded there. Anyway, I have the very same problem. Here’re the results of my experiments:

  • I wasn’t able to write HP branded 8x +R discs successfully, their ID was DVD+R:CMC MAG-E01-000.
  • I was able to write Memorex DVD+RWs (ID: DVD+RW:INFODISC-A10-001), although I haven’t tested them yet for quality.
  • I was able to write Memorex 8x DVD+Rs (RITEK R03) at 4x speed, but Nero CD-DVD Speed shows a couple of yellow, damaged blocks, two at the very beginning, just like peaceout350 wrote, and a couple of other chunks of two or three blocks.

My question is: how can I tell the media type of a DVD disc just by looking at the cover in the store? How can I make sure that I buy something that worked for me before?

Hmm. When I did a search on this issue in May, I didn’t find too many hits. Now it seems that the forums are teeming with users having the same problems with this drive. I hope a reliable solution will soon arise.

Ok, it seems I have the opposite problem than everyone else with this drive. I have a compaq presario v2310ca with the TS-L532R drive. I can burn DVD-R’s and DVD-RW’s perfectly but cannot burn CD-R or CD-RW. When I first got the laptop I could burn anything but now unexpectdly, CD-R and CD-RW’s cannot burn. I have no idea what it could be, I know its not the types of CD’s I’m using cause I’m using the same ones I did before when it worked and I have also tried other brands since it stopped working and none of them work.

I use Nero to burn and get the error messages “Invalid write state”, “Could not perform EndTrack”, “Illegal Disc”, and “Could not perform Fixation”. Another thing I noticed is that when I’m buring the CD’s, where it says “writing file” in Nero, it says READ. Usually it should say the file name of the file you are burning. I’ve also tried changing the DMA settings of the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. I have tried all different settings of transfer mode “DMA if available” and “PIO only”. I also noticed that for Device 1 current transfe mode is “Not Applicable”. I’m not sure if this is the problem but there does not seem to be an option to change this setting.

Anyways, with the posts I’ve seen here, it seems that these drives may be defective and HP/Compaq should all replace them free of charge.

They need to release a new firmware with the fixes

The only problem with a replacement is that you have to send in your laptop because it’s not a detachable drive. Don’t know about you but i don’t want/can’t do that.
