Bad burns

Hello

I have got a problem with my dvd burner. I first got a Liteon burner which failed to burn most of the dvd’s that i attempted to burn. The ones that did burn ok had large amounts of the second half of the dvd as unreadable.
I sent it back and got an NEC ND3520 as a replacement. I have been burning with this drive for a couple of days now and am getting some wierd results. Most of the burns (about 4 out of 5) work fine, verify fine, and show no errors on the nero surface scan function. However when i put them back in the burner some of them fail to read all the files on the dvd, running the surface scan again shows unreadable areas in the second half of the dvd again.

WHAT IS GOING ON?

Is this likely to be bad data, a bad drive, software problem, or is my computer knackered???

Thanks for any help you can offer me

Most likely the problem is poor quality media. You don’t mention the media brand or MID code.

thanks a lot for your help guys. Just out of interest how can u tell that the media is rubbish?

The MID code tells you the manufacturer of the Media and in the Media section there is a category for DVD Scans (quality check) where forum member post their experience with different makers/brands. for results with CMC you may have a look at
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=78606
as this is a thread about CMC.

CMC Mag. Crappy Media Corp.

Just look for Made in Japan on the DVD box. You can also email RIMA.COM and ask for a samply of Taiyo Yuden DVD+R and DVD-R media. They cost a little more. Also use 4X burn speed. You can also move up to 8X if the 4X burn is good.

I get OK burns with both 3500 and 1620 at 4X (Philips CMCmag AE 1). I bought 2 50 packs and am down to about 20. At 4X they play with the wife’s 301 and 400 disc Sony players. At 8X they freeze frame or pixleate real bad in the last 1/4 of the disc even with a CD speed quality of 97,go figger.

I have found that Fuji’s trash bin TY T02 are about as bad. TY must trash a lot of media that doesn’t meet thier QC. I have had NO PROBLEMS with real TY branded media.

Just my .02 cents USD worth, do with it as you will.

@daveyb
There are many positive reports about good results with CMC AE1 but it also seems to depend on the manufacturer.
I have no problems with CMC MAG AE1 Datawrite Yellow at 12x togther with my 3520. I use firmware 1.U6. Older firmwares gave me some trouble. The newer 1.U7 should give the same results.
What firmware did you try?

#16

CMC MAG AE1 Datawrite Grey discs burned at 12x with zero problems using modified Memorex_DVD16+/-DL4RWnD2 1.A3 firmware on this 3520.

#17

Does this Memorex firmware offer 12x speed from scratch? The standard firmwares only offer 8x. Would be interesting there is a different 12x strategy in relation to the modified ones!

Edit: Complete nonsense -> you already mentioned it is modified!
Never read about a modified memorex firmware

not sure what firmware i have, how can i find out?
