Backing up my first game (Barbie Securom *NEW* 4.x/5.x)

With much help from cdfreaks, I was able to back up my first game ever, the “Barbie Horse Adventures Mystery Ride” PC CD-ROM game.

My hats off to you if you do this often as it took me more than a week to figure out the process and obtain the software (mostly with the help from your pages, specifically the one page http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=126424 which this (my first post) is based upon).

STEP 0 of 5 (determine the protection type)

STEP 1 of 5 (create the MDS file)

• Uninstall all vestiges of previously installed Vivendi sofware
• Reboot
• Install Alcohol 120% version 1.9.5 (Build 3823)
• Put the original Vivendi Mattel Barbie game disc in your drive
• If the Barbie game starts (it will), then hit the game EXIT button
• Start Alcohol 120% version 1.9.5 (Build 3823)
• C:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\Alcohol.exe
• Press on the Alcohol 120% “File -> Image Making Wizard”
• Select the options below
• Datatype “Securom *New (4.x/5.x)” (do not choose “Securom *NEW”)
• CD/DVD Device = D:
• Read Speed = Maximum
• on -> Skip reading errors
• off -> Fast skip error blocks
• off -> Advanced Sector Scanning (Factor: 100)
• on -> Read Sub-Channel Data from current disc
• on -> Data Position Measurement (Precision: Normal)
• Press the “Next” button
• Select the options below
• Image name = Barbie_Horse
• Image format = Media Descriptor Image file (*.mds)
• Full name of Image file =
• C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My Documents\Alcohol
120%\Barbie_Horse.mds
• Press the “Start” button
• This pops up an Alcohol 120% Data Position Measurement screen saying “Please select the measuring speed for DPM function”
• Of the dozen speeds available, choose what works best
• For example, I chose “Maximum” but you’ll need to experiment
• Once you’ve chosen the DPM speed, press the OK button
• This writes the image files in about two minutes saying:
• Disc dumping D:
• Reading Mode: RAW + SUB-16, Ignore reading errors
• Source Info: Session: 1, Track: 1, Length: 248.4 MB/028:15:59
• DPM measuring precision: High / Maximum
• Wait for a while for DPM analysis
• Writing image file:
• C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My Documents\Alcohol%20120%\
• Barbie_Horse.mdf & Barbie_Horse.mds
• The CD-ROM drive then ejects the original Vivendi Mattel disc
• Press “File -> Exit” to quit out of Alcohol 120%

STEP 2 of 5 (patch the MDS file)

• Install “A-Ray Scanner” version 2.0.2.3
• http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Rip-Other-Tools/ARay
• Reboot
• Start A-Ray Scanner
• C:\Program Files\A-Ray_scanner\A-Ray.exe
• Click on the “OPTIONS” button
• Press the “TwinCreator” button
• Press the “Select Supported Image” button and open the MDF file
• C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My
Documents\Alcohol%20120%\Barbie_Horse.mdf
• Press the “Select Media Description” button and open the MDS file
• C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My
Documents\Alcohol%20120%\Barbie_Horse.mds
• Click the “Start” button
• You’ll get a screen saying
• The following peak ranges will be inserted into the image
• 1700-3000 3100-4050 4200-4700 5300-5850 (blah blah blah)
• Press the “OK” button to close this TwinCreator screen
• The patching process will take about a minute or two
• Click on “OK” in the TwinCreator Done form
• Click on “Exit” in the TwinCreator form
• Click on “EXIT” in the “A-Ray Scanner v2,0.2.3” window
• You will see two additional similar-sized files on your hard disk
• C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My Documents\Alcohol%20120%\patched.mdf
• C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My Documents\Alcohol%20120%\patched.mds
• Remove the Vivendi Mattel Barbie CD-ROM game from your D: drive

STEP 3 of 5 (burn the game-play CD-ROM)

• Put a blank CDR/W into your D: drive
• Start Alcohol 120% version 1.9.5 (Build 3823)
• C:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\Alcohol.exe
• Right click in the main box where the MDS file is listed
• C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\Alcohol 120%\Barbie_Horse.mds
• Size = 296.92 MB Media Descriptor Image file
• Select “Add Images” from the menu that pops up
• Choose the patched.mds file
• C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My Documents\Alcohol%20120%\patched.mds
• Size = 304.44 MB Media Descriptor Image file
• Highlight the patched.mds media descriptor image file
• Press on “File->Image Burning Wizard”
• In the “Select an Image file you would like to record”, choose
• C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My Documents\Alcohol%20120%\patched.mds
• Check the box next to “Delete image file after recording”
• Press the Alcohol 120% Image Burning Wizard “Next” button
• You will immediately see an error pop up saying “No RMPS info in the
source, you are not able to make a copy using this datatype!”
• Just click the “OK” button to ignore this warning
• Change the Datatype to “Securom *NEW” (not “Securom *NEW 4.x/5/x”)
• Select your “Write Speed” to “Maximum” or to “4X (600KB/Sec)”
• Press the “Start” button
• You will immediately see an error pop up saying “Particular Lead-Out
Setting” of “Image size does NOT match to Lead-Out recorded in TOC!” and
“Lead-Out Address in TOC: 28:15:59” and “Image size 28:58:56”.
• That “Particular Lead-Out Setting” will also have these settings
• on keep TOC as on source CD, write until end of image file
• off Modify Lead Out address to the length of the image file
• off Keep TOC as on source CD, write until Lead Out address
• Keeping those default options, press the “OK” button
• Alcohol 120% will then burn the patched image in about ten minutes
• Alcohol 120% will also eject the newly burned CD-ROM when done
• When Alcohol 120% ejects the newly burned CD-ROM, press “Finish”
• Then press “File -> Exit” to exit out of Alcohol 120%
• You have now completed the first step of the two-step process
• Write “Barbie Backup 2 of 2 - PLAY CD-ROM” on the newly burned CD-ROM
• You now have a game-play CD-ROM but you need an install CD-ROM

STEP 4 of 5 (burn the installation CD-ROM)

• Make a copy of your newly burned CD-ROM using Nero or equivalent
• Use the “Exact CD” or “CD Copy” feature of your burner software
• This copy will take much longer than you are used to
• Label this double copy “Barbie Backup 1 of 2 - INSTALL CD-ROM”

STEP 5 of 5 (install and play the game)

• Install your Barbie game using disc 1 of 2 INSTALL CD-ROM
• Play your Barbie game using disc 2 of 2 PLAY CD-ROM
• Safeguard your original Barbie game playing CD-ROM

In summary, this process of creating two CD-ROMs (one for installing, one for playing) from the original Vivendi Universal Games Barbie game is not intuitive so the five steps are listed above to help the next parent with the same problem of backing up their Vivendi Universal Games Barbie Horse Adventures Mystery Ride Securom NEW 4.84.84.009 PC CD-ROM game

While I was looking up how to copy this Securom new 4.84.84.0009 Vivendi Universal Games Mattel “Barbie Horse Adventures Horse Adventures Mystery Ride” PC game CD-ROM, I found another method which requires the Blindwrite BWA Builder, version 4 or version 5.

The problem is I absolutely can not find a version 4 trial version of the BlindWrite BWA Builder anywhere on the Internet. And version 5 doesn’t come with the necessary BWA Builder.

To back up a twenty dollar PC game using sixty dollar software just doesn’t make any (economic) sense.

Do you know where we can find a BWA Builder version 4 trial version on the Internet?

I have seen it on one of the sites that keeps old versions of programs. Will try and find the link for you and post it.

That would be wonderful if you could find a link to the older BWA Builder version 4 software.

Most, if not all, of the Securom new 4.x/5/x tutorials below utilize the version 4 BWA Builder which is very hard to come by. I suspect only the best net surfers could find it as I’m not bad but I have not found it in a week of searching!

You’re a genius! I just picked it up and I’ll test it out when I buy some new blank discs as I used up all the ones I had trying unsuccessfully. Now that I have BWA Builder version 4, I can try the methods described in all the referenced tutorials!

Here is the process I will try now that I have BlindWrite version 4!

This recipe was summarized from notes provided by

CREATE Barbie_Horse.ccd and Barbie_Horse.sub

• Uninstall all vestiges of previously installed Barbie sofware
• Reboot
• Install a fresh copy of Alcohol 120% version 1.9.5 (Build 3823)
• Reboot
• Put the original Barbie Horse Adventures Mystery Ride disc in drive D:
• If the Barbie game starts (it will), then hit the game EXIT button
• Start Alcohol 120% version 1.9.5 (Build 3823)
• C:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\Alcohol.exe
• Press on “File->Image Making Wizard”
• Select the options below
• Datatype Securom *NEW (do not choose “Securom *NEW 4.x/5.x”)
• CD/DVD Device = D:
• Read Speed = Maximum
• on -> Skip reading errors
• off -> Fast skip error blocks
• off -> Advanced Sector Scanning (Factor: 100)
• on -> Read Sub-Channel Data from current disc
• off -> Data Position Measurement (Precision: Normal)
• Press the “Next” button
• Select the options below
• Image name = Barbie_Horse
• Image format = CloneCD Image file (*.ccd)
• Full name of Image file =
• C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My Documents\Alcohol120%\Barbie_Horse.ccd
• Press the “Start” button
= This writes the image files in about two minutes saying:
= Reading Mode: RAW + SUB-16, Ignore reading errors
= Source Info: Session: 1, Track: 1, Length: 248.4 MB/028:15:59
= Writing image file:
= C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My Documents\Alcohol$20120%
= Barbie_Horse.img & Barbie_Horse.sub
= The CD-ROM drive then ejected the original disc

CREATE BARBIE_HORSE.bwa

• Install a fresh copy of blindwrite’s bwa builder version 4.x
• Reboot
• Put the original Barbie Horse Adventures Mystery Ride CD-ROM in drive D:
• If the Barbie game starts (it will), then hit the game EXIT button
• Obtain an archive copy of BlindWrite BWA Builder version 4 (very difficult)
• Start BlindWrite BWA Builder 4 (BwaBuilder.exe)
• The blue header line will say “BWA builder - VSO Software 2002 - 2003”
• Nowhere will it say it’s version 4 (you’ll just have to trust it on that)
• In the BWA Builder 4 interface, choose your D: drive
• In the BWA Builder 4 interface, set the speed as low as possible (1x to 8x)
• Leave the “Max sector” setting at the default of 300000
• Click on the BWA Builder 4 “Start” button
• A screen will pop up saying “BwaBuilder, Automatic set last sector?”
• Click on the “Yes” button to set the last sector automatically
• You will see a “Work in progress” go from 1.00% to to 100.00%
• You will also see a graph build itself in the BWA Builder 4 interface
• When the analysis completes, analyze the graph
• You’re hoping for a fairly smooth curve with only one or two spikes
• If your curve looks good, do a “File -> Save BWA”
• Save the BWA file as Barbie_Horse.bwa in the directory
C:\Documents and Settings\Donna\My Documents\Alcohol 120%\Barbie_Horse.bwa

Create Barbie_Horse.

• Start Twinpeak and in the Options select the twin sector step.
• The default of 15 and 6 and 50 are known to work.
• Select the .ccd file and the .bwa file and then click Start.
• Twinpeak will suggest where it will insert twinsectors
• Click OK if you’re satisfied to allow it to patch the image
• When it’s finished, you’ll have three new files in the same folder
• Those files will be patched.ccd, patched.img and patched.sub.
• Start alcohol’s image burning wizard
• Burn patched.ccd using datatype = securom new (not securom new 4.x)
• This is a very non-standard CD-ROM so burn as slow as possible
• Burn at as low a speed as you are comfortable (8x is good)
• When asked, select the following burning option
• Keep TOC as on source cd, write until end of image file".
