I can’t get my back up to play in my computer or my stand alone dvd player.
Using DVDFab to create file and DVD Shrink to burn. getting a ‘successful burn’ at end of burn, disc pops out, but when i try to play the disk the computer will not acknowledge the disc is even there. using power dvd as a player, it shows load on the screen, stalls for a second or so and then asks me to insert disc. have tried diferent type blanks and movies but get the same results…:confused:

I assume you are using the free decryption section within DVDFab since you are also using DVDShrink.

Try this process. Decrypt and rip the entire movie to the hard drive using DVDFab HD Decrypter.

Reduce the size with DVDShrink if necessary to fit onto a blank dvd, but have the output as an ISO file rather than using DVDShrink to call on DVDDecrypter or Nero to burn.

Burn the disk using ImgBurn (free), at 8x speed. Use only good quality media like Verbatim 16x or Taiyo Yuden 8x +R disks.

If you absolutely must have DVDShrink doing the burn process automatically, get the version that can use ImgBurn in place of DVDDecrypter. You can download it from this page: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVD_Shrink

Never used this imgburn before. Must be doing something wrong.When I write in test mode all comes out successful. Then I change it to verify and I get errors. Will try and find a walk through and try again… Said something about not being able to read/ use medium?

Post your ImgBurn log here and let us take a look. Go into ImgBurn and click on Help, then ImgBurn Logs. Copy and paste the latest one with errors.

what movie is this as DVDFab has a new way of updating the free version. The free version gets updates to the new copy protection 30 to 60 days after the pad version gets them

Tried imgburn again to no avail. Uninstalled it and went with nero again.
This time, at about 47% the disc failed. I made an attempt to save this log. Same thing happened after several attempts…

Your burner doesn’t seem to like these particular disks. You can check for a firmware update for the drive, or you can use better quality disks.
I found a listing at rpc1.org for this drive, but the firmware listed is very old…the files date back to 2003 and will not help.

Your best bet is to use Verbatim 16x or Taiyo Yuden 8x disks with this drive.

Thanks for taking a look. Have used these discs before with success, so I have continued to pick them up when I see them on sale(TDK DVD-R 1-16x)You once told me before about Verbatim and I have been able to use those with little or no problem.Also am able to use HP brand when I can find them. I know this is an older burner, but I at least thought there would be a newer/more recent firmware update out there. Any idea what makes it go to 47% and then decide to fail?

The problem with buying TDK, or HP or Memorex or any of the Imation group of brands is that they don’t always use the same type of disks, despite them looking exactly like the previous ones. They change mid codes, and sometimes suppliers without warning. So these Ritek F1 disks may or may not be the same mid code that you used on previous disks you burned. Also, Ritek is notoriously inconsistent in quality of their disks, so even if they are the same mid code, they may not be the same quality grade as the ones you used successfully.

As to the 47% failure point…sorry, I’m not sure why it went that far before stopping.

And here I thought that they were different discs! Had long since wrote off on Memorex brand and Imation quite a while before that. HP brand were the first I’d ever used, the TDK brand would usually work out OK. Verbatim work nearly 100% of the time and I’m guessing now that the times they didn’t it was the burner. It’s just strange, though; every time it fails it stops at 47%.

Went and got some Verbatim DVD-R discs. Got one successful burn. After that, four in a row failed. Also, log showed DMA off. Went to task manager and enable DMA, followed prompt to restart, checked task manager again to be sure DMA was still enabled. After failed burn, checcked log history - showed DMA off but task manager still shows DMA enabled…

Are you using Nvidia IDE drivers? “nvatabus” seems to indicate this. If so, roll back the drivers to the generic Microsoft IDE drivers.

Nero does a poor job of reporting DMA status using the Nvidia drivers for the IDE controllers.

Not sure how to ‘roll the drivers back’. How is this done?

Go into Device Manager and look at the IDE Controller that your optical drive is on. Look at Driver tab, then you should see an option to Roll Back the driver. This should allow you to use the drivers within whichever Windows operating system you are using. The generic Microsoft drivers are very good.

Many people report problems using the Nvidia IDE drivers.

If you don’t get the option to roll back, you can uninstall the current driver (provided your operating system hard drive isn’t on this particular IDE controller), then reboot and allow the operating system to find the “new” hardware and install the driver for it.

Found it. Did the roll back on the drivers, now the DMA is off. Went ahead and tried a back up(Angels And Demons-full disc). Came out successful…
Tried one before that(Angels And Demons-movie only) and it showed successful but it wouldn’t playback on computer or stand alone player.
Will try another; this time a different movie to see what results I get…

You say DMA is off? You really need DMA on for your burner. Look in my signature and click on Womble’s guide for checking DMA. The important part to look for is Current Transfer Status, which should be Ultra DMA 2 or 4 (don’t know which one for this particular drive).

Yes, when I did the roll back it required a restart, after restart I checked the drives and they installed with DMA off. I tried two different back ups(as noted) and they were both sucessful. When DMA is on it shows Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra 33. What now? I thought DMA was supposed to be on also, but figured it was OK. Now it says ‘let Bios select transfer mode’.

Hadn’t heard anything from any body. Went ahead and enabled DMA on drives. Tried to make another back up - burn failed. That’s 2 of 4 attempts successful…
All previous (last four) and present attempts made using Verbatim DVD-R blanks:
Nero history shows DMA off, but device/systems manager shows Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra 33.
