Back again

 OK…I’m having a really wierd thing crop up now.
I started out copying onto Memorex 8X-R DVD’s only to find out that they didn’t work in one of the DVD players in the house. They did play (although I never watched one all the way through… just popped it in to see if it worked) on the good main DVD playing in the front of the house and on the computers… or so I thought. It turns out ALL the DVD’s I was copying to take on our trip will work fine for the first 3/4ths of the movie. Then they get all garbled…some lose sound, others just freeze up and do that herky jerky movement.
Next I re-copied them to a few old Memorex 4X+R DVD I still had laying around and they worked great in everything… sound good all the way through, nothing garbled. Thought great… stick with Memorex and +R. Well can’t find 4X+R so bought some Memorex 8X+R and they won’t copy at all! I got one to go through the process but when I went to play it in the DVD it can’t find a disk.
They give an error bad disk and something about not recognised media and one that said my DVD burner needs cleaning (wasted like 5 disks trying to make it work.
The DVD burner in this computer is fairly “old”, only an 8X itself. I use DVD43 with 1 Click DVD.
On the options menu when I copy I have nothing checked, and if I’m remembering when you go into the Copy to DVD SE options settings I think it’s burn rate is set to “fastest”. I need to check again when I get home.
I only bought 1 Click DVD a little over a week ago and when it installed it put 2 icons on the desktop, one for 1 Click and 1 for Copy to DVD. I’ve seen messages where there is a version that has both of these incorporated into one but haven’t figured how to get the update.
I’m going through all my blank DVD’s and getting nothing usable and hate to keep trying over and over and wasting the ones I have left. :frowning:

So does anyone have any suggestions? Would a slower burn speed set through Copy to DVD possibly allow the -R DVD’s to copy and not get garbled at the end? Would the Copy to DVD settings also control why all the sudden the +R media is not recognised? Would selecting the titles and menu for everything make a difference?

If I need to post (copy/paste) logs or something it will need to be explained where to find them… and do you do that right when the error occurs or is it stored in some deep dark mysterious place on the computer

Thanks!

Right off the bat I would suggest you stop using Memorex!!! Anyone with burning experience will tell you they are of poor quality! Yes they work for some but you are having problems so try another brand like TaiYo Yuden, Sony, Verbatim or Fuji Film made in Japan if you can find them!

Most important would be to us the most upto date version of 1Click which now has Copytodvd embedded in the 1Click folder so no need to download the copytodvd se version!

Go here to download the latest version! http://www.lgsoftwareinnovations.com/download.asp

Uninstall 1Click and copytodvd using add/remove programs in the control panel before installing the new 1Click!

With this new version of 1Click when it is open if you want to see the log files for 1Click or copytodvd you push F7 or F8 and if you want to adjust the copytodvd settings you push the F9 key.

OK going to get the 21 day free trial of copy DVD and do yet another test and just did the upgrade of 1 click…
Do you know what would cause the writer to just spit out blanks when using 8X+R instead of 4X+R’s? The 4X+R worked beautifully! I even went and changed the copy speed to 4x and the -R came out all herky jerky again and the +R never would load.

Could it be the DVD player??? That it doesn’t read 8X DVD’s?

I bought both FUJIFILM 8X+R and SONY 8X+R but because of the other 8X+R aren’t working at all I don’t want to open them yet and have even more ocasters :frowning: At least the 8X-R’s are copying albeit horibbly not at all at the end…but they get something on them.

The current settings (which I think are all default) are under the file system tab only ISO 9660 (MS DOS) and Joliet (long name and asian characters) are checked … I didn’t check them so I am thinking they are default? Should UDF 1.02, CGMS or ISO file version be checked instead? And what exactly are these things?

Under the writing device tab I changed the maximum writing speed from max to 4X and the only box checked is the Support HD-BURN. Should DVD-R SAO first also be checked? I couldn’t find anything that says copy +R, and that DVD-R SAO thing is the only place I saw -R.

How do I find out if I should use +R or -R media?

is it possible that (memorex being “crummy” to begin with) the stack I got of the 8X+R’s is defective? All of them bad? I mean the 4X+R’s worked beautifully which is why I got the 8X Memorex in +R and -R. Now I’m learning they aren’t the best option…but why would one speed work great and the other not even register in the DVD player after copied?
And they look like they are copying, but thne nothing is there whne you go to play it.
I’m trying to solve the 8X+R mystery before opening yet another stack of another name brand if it’s a problem between -R and +R.
If it’s a speed issue I did slow down the speed to 4X and I’m using the updated 1 click dvd with anydvd to see if that helps.

I’d like to see one of your log files. To post a log file open 1Click and then push the F7 key and the copytodvd log will open. Please copy Your most recent session and paste it here in your next post.

@ mizcat

You mention that your burner is “fairly Old”; you might check for firware updates for your burner to insure that it is capable of burning the newer faster media.

follow 4hams advise and post your log file for him to look at, next to the author of 1Click he might be the most knowledgable folks around when it comes to this program and has help many of us out in the past.

Thanks campman, although i am sure that there are a number of folks who no this program better than I, and if not we are all in trouble!

You surely got that right about 4hams…he’s one of a kind with support and direction to all…

Good to see ya aRMY83! How was the Christmas Shopping?

Here are some of the logs. where there was a media error I took out the disk and did the try again and then it would go.
The media burner is about a year old. I went to the site on the burner
this is what it says when I start the live update

A box popped up saying my current version is 0054 and the update says the latest is 0060.
I click ok it goes to the WINDOWS FLASH and it says this firmware can be used on below drives (1) DVDRW IDE1008
I hit upgrade button and come to a screen that gives a list of “warnings” and a the bottom either a cancel or upgrade button. The 2nd “warning” said “Please do not upgrade firmware unless you have been specifically instructed to do so!” Then 3 said something like incorrect installation may render the drive unable to write so at that point I picked cancel. Went to the support page and sent an e-mail explaining my dilema and it came back undeliverable. (which is how I ended up on this on this merry-go-round :stuck_out_tongue: … after a hard drive crash and while re-installing DVD X Copy Platinum learned that the access codes no longer work as they are no longer around, did some research that led me to 1 Click… now here I am  )
Undeliverable e-mail scares me! Especially if I’m thinking about downloading something from their site and can’t contact them if it goes wrong.

On the DVD writer itself it says EMPREX 8X on the front and in small letters on the bottom DVD RW/R, RW DVD+ReWritable and compact disc ReWritable and there is a web www.drvupdate.com From their web site it is IDE1008 and should be compatable with both +R and -R But as to maker/brand I can’t find any name other than EMPREX on the front of the DVD burner itself.

Not sure if there is some way to go find one of the 4X+R copy logs anymore (the ones that work in everything). It’s been a few days and I’ve been trying so may ways to get things working.

RIght now everything I can think of that might help. The computer is self built one the boyfriend did and operating system is Windows XP 5.1. I did the update of my 1 Click so it’s the all in one with Copy toDVD, and I am using AnyDVD for decoding.
Looking at Copy ToDVD settings this is what is currently selected:
under the file system tab only ISO 9660 (MS DOS) and Joliet (long name and asian characters) are checked … I didn’t check them so I am thinking they are default? Should UDF 1.02, CGMS or ISO file version be checked instead? And what exactly are these things?
Under the writing device tab I changed the maximum writing speed from max to 4X (with no effect +R still don’t play back at all and -R still go scrambly) and the only box checked is the Support HD-BURN. Should DVD-R SAO first also be checked, or checked instead??
I couldn’t find anything that says copy +R, and that DVD-R SAO thing is the only place I saw -R.

That said I have a Compaq Presario 5000 that I am going to be ordering NEC Black IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3550A - Retail 44.99 from www.newegg.com
go get some made in Japan -R DVD’s (exchange the +R’s I just got). I have a pack of the +R FUJIFILM and they say made in Japan, but the SONY +R I got say made in Taiwain. I’ve been advised get made in Japan media and use the -R for more versitility.

Anything else you can add? Might the NEC burner be able to at least make some copies on the rather large stack of left over memorex DVD’s? Even if only 50% copy it’s better than the 100% failure rate I am getting now!

Thanks!

Try the +R FujiFilm with the setup you have now and see if they work? It sounds like a media problem! Ritek work well for some and not at all for others! And any disc with the media code CMCMAG is crap and should be avoided!
Let us know how you make out!

I’ll be back a little later. I’m going to check for some info in regards to your burner!

Here you will find info on your burner. Have a look!

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&ned=ca&q=DVDRW+IDE1008&btnmeta%3Dsearch%3Dsearch=Search+the+Web

Writing device used : 1:1:0 - DVDRW IDE1008 0054

Blue= your burner. Use it as a search item on the internet.

Red= the firmware version currently installed on your burner.

Good luck!

“any disc with the media code CMCMAG is crap”

where do you find the media code? is it on the package somewhere or only once I try to burn it on the log files?

Looked at a couple of those sitres and they all say the flash update should be used as a last resort. should I just hold my breath and do it to take my burner to version 60? Is there any way to recover it if it fry’s it? Boyfriend will kill me cause he read the warnings and said no way!

If the burner came with the computer, then you need to go to the website of the computer manufacturer to get the proper firmware update!

Did you try burning with the FujiFilm made in Japan?

As to the Christmas Shopping, I’ll addy ya tomorrow… hheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…

Lookin forward to it!

Just got back with new media in hand… did find out that Fry’s WILL take back the memorex stuff (prorated for how many used) so I can at least get most $$ back for 2 of the mostly unused stacks of Memorex!! :iagree: That’s definately good news!

I am trying a movie that has failed on both the Memorex +R and -R.

Should have results shortly.

OK the FujiFilm 8X-R worked with no break up in the JVC DVD player but still no dice in the WallMart APEX Special. How can I find out what type media will play in that one for a final test run?

Here is the log from theone that just worked.

to be honest with you i think you are getting really good advice at DVDextreme and there are few in this 1Click forum too help! I would stick with dvdextreme and the folks there will fix any 1Click problems you have!

If you have any other dvd related questions then the other forums here on cdfreaks are very well equipped with very knowledgeble people who will be very willing to help!
Thats all for me.
Good luck!
