Ay my wits end with two drives

Thanks for looking. I’m posting here as a last chance effort. I’ve got two DVD-ROM drives that are driving me nuts, as I can’t seem to be able to fix the problem I’m having.

Here’s what I got:
Win XP
Slave: _NEC DVD+RW ND-110A - firmware 1.93
Master: MAD DOG MD-16XDVD9A2 - firmware 1f3

slapped on an ASUS A7N8X nForce2 motherboard on the secondary IDE channel

The Issues:
Any writeable DVD media is not recognized as a DVD.
Upon Insertion, CDs/DVDs are not recognized (name on “My Computer” Drive icon)
I have to start my machine with a DVD/CD inside a drive for it to be recognized.

The Onset:
I once tried to change my NEC drive’s firmware, and the computer froze mid process. The drive hadn’t been the same since. I thought I could resolve the issue with installing the mad dog, but now the same things happen with both drives. Very frustrating.

I have done the following:
Changed ATA Cables
Updated Firmware
Updated nForce2 (Motherboard) IDE Drivers
Pulled out hair

Any ideas or similar issues once resolved, I’d like to know! Thanks so much!

The first thing I would try is to uninstall the nForce2 IDE drivers and just use the standard MS drivers.
