Autostrategy: cannot create strategy

[qanda]This thread is about the Plextor PX-716A. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]Hello!

In “AUTOSTRATEGY Database” dialog “Create strategy” button is disabled no matter what other options I use in the diolog. So I cannot test/create a new strategy.

Why is this and how to create it? Did I forget something.

I use PlexTools Professional XL V3.11, PX-716a, firmware version 1.11,
Windows XP Pro, ASUS P5K-E

Thanks in advance!

That is normal behaviour for a PX-716. The 716 model only allows the use of Autostrategy with media unknown to the drive. As long as the media is known to the drive (there is a writing strategy in the firmware) AS cannot be used.

On later models (755/760) AS can also be used on known media.

Thanks for reply!

Do you want to say there is no way to improve results with “known media” ?

I generaly satisfied with default behaviour of the my PX-716, but recently tried DVD-R 16X bought at Costco and results just unacceptable:
at certificied speed peaks of PI errors in the middle of the disk up to 900!
(see attachment)

Is this what the default strategy supposed to to?

Or this is not recommended media?

Here s the DVDinfo scan of the media

That is a bad result. I have little experience with Ritek F1 media.

What speed did you write with? From the error graph it looks like you selected 16x and the drive slowed by itself shortly after reaching the 2GB mark.

I selected MAX (auto) in imgburn. The real maximum was less, about 12, I think.
If the default result is so bad (supposedly it is done accordingly to the Plextor strategy stored in the firmware) and it is less than certified speed anyway, why we need this at all? It just does not work.

Or make possible to teach the drive by using autostrategy. But accordingly to you this is not possible, because the entry already exists. Where is the logic?

I do not understand something

My logic would be to find some better media  Like Taiyo Yuden or Mitsubishi Chemical/Verbatim.

I agree with Two Degrees; Ritek media is not for everyone. :disagree:

Neither AS, the built in strategy nor Powerrec are almihgty and can guarantee a perfect burn every time, especially on media that are of less than optimal quality.

The problem is that the quality of some media is subject to great variations. So the media in some spindle may be able to burn at 12x, some even at 16x and a third at only 8x. Sometimes there is even such a variance within a single spindle of media! That is why Plextor offers quality checking functionality and also offers all speed possibilities. It offers you the possibility to use even such mediocre quality media.

In your case it’s probably best to try again with 8x or even 6x and see if you can get acceptable results. If not i’d recommend you try finding better media.
