Audio from CD/DVD is screwed up; playing from HD is fine

Hello, any help is appreciated!

I have two CD/DVD drives. Everything’s been working pretty much fine until today. I noticed that the audio playing a CD was muffled and static. I can hear it but it is definitely not right.

I thought I just needed to reboot, but it did not help. So on further investigation and several reboots I found that I can play MP3s and WAV files just fine from the hard drive. Sound from the web is fine too. It’s only when I play from the a CD or DVD that there is a problem.

it does the same thing with BOTH CD/DVD drives, so it seems unlikely the both drives would fail in the same way at the same time.

it also appears that the video from DVDs is jumpy.

I checked my device manager and I see no conflicts. I played around with using my onboard audio device and my external firewire audio interface and seem to get the same result with both.

If anyone has any ideas on what could be causing this, I’d really appreciate it!
