Audio cd vs data cd

Why want any of the data cds work in a Phillips home recorder unit? Is there something encoded in the audio discs. Is there a loop hole? Can someone explain. thanx

If you want your CDs to be playable in Dicmans, music players, etc., you have to buy the blank CDs marked as “Audio CD”. Because From what I’ve heard, they are identical to the regular ones, except for some marking information (?) that identifies them as audio CDs. They are also slightly more expensive; the recording companies take a cut from their price (since, you know, you’re going to use them to steal their music and all that).

(I first heard about all this a few months ago, so my details might be blurry. Corrections welcome).
