ATAPI DVD drive not burning discs

I recently purchased a Gateway FX desktop computer that came with a pre-installed CD/DVD+/-R/W drive.

Whenever I try to burn a data dvd, pretty much every one in three burns fails. The burning gets up to about 70% and then Nero just says ‘burn process failed.’

The only information I can find out about the drive is that it is an “ATAPI DVD W DH16W1P” (though by searching these forums I’ve found that it’s apparently a PHILIPS-LITE-ON drive).

Are there any drivers I need to update? (Windows says I have the latest drivers, and I couldn’t find any online through Google).

Any help as to what I can do to get the DVD drive to burn correctly would be greatly appreciated…

Welcome to the forum

Can you provide an error log from Nero? You may have to sacrifice another disc to get one (Nero should ask if you want to save one when the burn fails).

Remember to remove your Nero serial number from the log first though

Hi!

Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town for a couple days.

Here is the Nero log, hope this helps you diagnose my problem

Thanks again!

Hello again!

Your disc’s media code (RITEK F1) isn’t the best, and the (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) in your log also leads me to suspect the discs.

But…you can try to burn them at 8 or 12x and see how you go - they may be fine at that speed (I never burn at 16x or over except when I’m testing media).

Failing that, if a slower write speed still doesn’t help, try some Sony or Verbatim discs instead, again at 12x or so.

Wow, thanks for the lightning quick reply!

I actually tried burning at 8x and 4x a little while ago, and still had the same problem. These are free discs I got from Office Depot, so I guess that makes sense that they’re not the best :p, I’ll get some of the brands you suggested and try them out this weekend.

What’s strange, though, is that I use the same discs to burn data DVDs on my laptop, and have never had a problem with them there (I’ve burned about 15-20 discs in the past several months on my laptop using the same discs, and have only had a problem with them on my desktop, which I just purchased last month).

Hehe, right place, right time

Shame your Philips doesn’t like them. Your laptop burner is probably a bit less fussy, it happens (hey at least you can still use them with that burner!)

Have someone solved this problem?

The OP changed media, I guess.

If you tell us what your problem is, we can try to help. If your problem is the same as above, please attach a Nero error log if you can, so we can see where the problem lies.

Oh, and welcome to the forum

Hmmm, your problem has a slightly different cause, I’d say, because even though that media is 1x (!), it’s good media assuming it’s Verbatim-branded.

DAM is reported as being off for your HDD, but that’s probably because it’s SATA and Nero’s just misreporting it.

Can you go to the DMA link in my sig, and report the DMA status (“Current Transfer Mode”) of your burner?

In Ata Channel 0 Dma enabled is ticked.

Ultra DMA Mode 4.

For DMA to be ticked instead of a Current Transfer Mode being shown…you’re using Vista I guess?

Anyway, that’s fine. Are the discs Verbatim branded?

Yes, I’m using Vista and discs are maxell branded.

Any chance you could try different media just to rule it out?

Can you explain a little better. What you mean, media?

I don’t understand because I’m finnish.

If you mean writing speed I can burn only with 1x.

Media means the type of disks you are using. Arachne was just asking if you had any other types of blank dvds to try.

I’m sorry, I meant could you try a different brand of disc if you have any. (Thanks Kerry! ;))

It would help rule out problems with the disc - BTW, I notice it’s a 1x disc, has it been written to a lot? Could be that the disc is just worn out.

Which discs are the best? Verbatim?

Oh yes. Those, and Taiyo Yuden (which is often found online under different brands).
