Asus DRW-24B3ST errors burning DVD+R DL

Hi folks, great Forum here. Found it with googles hep and must say: respect! Like it here.
My first post is a problem I have with the Asus Drive.

I bought it new and burned a few discs with it:

  • 2-3 DVD-Rs
  • a few CD-RW (burn and erase)
  • a few DVD+R DL (no good media, but the mdia burned well with my Pioneer 109 and burned well with the asus, at least the first three times)!

The first three DVD+R DL burnes straight ahead, no warning at all, but with the fourth one: I get sometimes this warnings:
“Set L0 Data Zone Capacity Failed! - Reason: Power Calibration Area Is Full”
or
“Retry Failed - Reason: Invalid Field in Parameter List”
and so on.

Sometimes it works, sometimes the warning comes up and I retry it until it works. When it tried to do this “setting of L0 Data” I also hear a noise, something like letting fall a very small metal screw on a glas plate.
To be true I don’t know if the noise was there or not!

But I have to say:

  • Any other media until now: no problem
  • first three DVD+R DL no problem/warning
  • up the fourth: warnings, but, when it starts, it burns until the end! No Problems at all during the burning procedure!

I don’t know anymore! I already crossflashed it to a PLextor L890SA! Same!

  • Is the drive or laser or both damaged?!?
  • Has the drive already started to die?

PS: My Media is RITEK-S04-66, I know, but: I have burned 50 with the old very old pioneer, no prob at all there, not a single one! The first three with asus the same thing! But it started with the fourth DL i tried to burn with the asus!

Hope someone can give me any advice (besides buying verbatims)! I mean when it actually starts burning, it burns the DVD until the end, both layers @ 8x!

First off Welcome to the forums PKOneTwo

Sorry I know you don’t really want to hear this but you will probably find that is the only really
good advice you will receive around here is to just get yourself some Verbatim DL discs as those
Ritek DL discs :Z are just not all that reliable when burning. :disagree:

As a matter of fact I will not use anything with the Ritek name on it not after getting burned by
that media so many times in the past with such low quality discs. :a

Hehe, I know that. I will, in future.

But my concerns are about the drive:

  • Is the drive or laser or both damaged?!?
  • Has the drive already started to die?

And we don’t have to forget:

  • old Pioneer IDE 109 burned them all!
  • Any other media until now: no problem
  • first three DVD+R DL no problem/warning
  • up the fourth: warnings, but, when it starts, it burns until the end! No Problems at all during the burning procedure!

This is my concern!

Nope, your media is crap!

If ther batch before werent then the current one at least is.

GET IT!

So the drive is allright?
No indices that the laser could be damaged? Or drive could be dying?
The described noise is normal?

PS: it’s all the same batch. Im just concerned about the drive.

I would have to say your drive is probably alright its just more or less those
crappy Ritek :Z discs that is causing you all the problems.

Try some good media in the drive and if you get the same thing happening
again with the warnings then you should start worrying about your drive as
you might have a bad drive on your hands. :iagree:

I will buy verbatims next time, promised :iagree:
but right now i can give back my drive or keep it. That’s what I have to decide.

Can the laser/drive be broken/dying even if it is burning perfectly (without any problems and @full speed) any CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-R (Verbatims)?

i think it should be the same laser being used (at least for DVD buring) and therefore, it have to be the riteks, but i wanted to be sure, since here are some experts ???

PS: What I (noob) don’t get is, why the oldschool IDe Pioneer 109 burned 50 of them without a problem (same batch) and newer better sata good asus drive starts after 3 to make problems?
I can’t explain that with my logic! Asus = crappy laser?

There are 2 different lasers in your drive one for CD and one for DVD and yes
the same DVD laser is used for burning all DVD’s no matter what brand or size
it is a single layer or a dual layer. :iagree:

That is why you sometimes hear of drives that will burn/read either CD or DVD
but not both as one of the lasers has quit working. I’ve got a system here now
that a friend brought in for me to repair that is like that both drives are borked
one won’t read/burn anything and the other one will sometimes read a CD but it
will not read or burn a DVD.

To sum up:
If the drive Burns CDs that Laser and the Drives Motor etc. is Fine.
And if i can burn other Single Layer DVDs with no Problem at all, that the DVD Laser is Fine As well.
And the Noise i hear is Fine too, right?

PS:
did get your Hands in an IDE 109 pioneer? Is the DVD Laser of the pioneer that strong or Why does it burn so well with riteks? Even After drive is about 6 Years old!!!

Am I right here?

This would be the opposite of what I’ve heard so far. Is that right?
What would that mean for me (referred to my concerns about my drive)?

I do believe that is right one laser but seperate burning for CD and DVD
that is why I called it two lasers if one side or whatever quits then it is
not going to burn or read one or the other but maybe I’m wrong.

i thought here are experts who can us explain it?

Your picture shows the lens that focuses one of 2 laser diodes (2 different wave lengths) depending if the disc is a cd or a dvd.

#15

i don’t see the other lens, where is it?
is it possible to explain it more exact or show us some pictures or graphics?

it’s important to clean both lens.

by the way i don’t find the laser mirrors also to clean them.

smoker’s plaques, dust, fluff…

is there some place for a how to overhaul a dvd-burner?

i had heard some dead cd or dvd lasers can be revitalised by adjust the potentiometer.
i am looking for a step by step tutorial.

I do not and have never claimed to be an expert on anything I just tell what
I know about things and try to help others out the best I can.

The definition of expert as I’ve always heard it goes something like this.
ex= a has been and a spert = a drip so expert = a has been drip
