ASUS BW-12B1ST any thoughts on this burner?

Newegg has the ASUS BW-12B1ST Blu-ray burner on sale and was wondering what the general thoughts on this burner are?

Who makes this drive?

Anyone have any opinions on this Blu-ray burner? Is it any good, or should I pass?

Is the ASUS drive a Liteon iHBS112 clone? The specs seem to indicate that.

Is it possible the Liteon firmware is interchangeable with the ASUS?

I went ahead and bought the drive, and came with some free Optical Quantum media. I burned my first BD-R and the quality looks pretty good for PhilipR04 media (which seems to be hit or miss for some). Apparently the drive is not riplocked either which is a plus.

Sorry that no one is answering you B0bert. I believe you are correct in saying this is a Lite-on clone. Other than that I know absolutely nothing about this drive. But we’re willing to listen/read your continuing reports.

Might want to try some Verbatim 6x BDR with it. (non-LTH variety). Many seem to like the SmartBlu media made by FTI: http://www.mediamegamall.com/smartblu-bluray-disc-25gb-silver-lacquer-print-25pk-cakebox-sbr4ssh25-p-27685.html?osCsid=19ff8f6ccd88bbfe9610af734a852713
but I haven’t tried them myself.

Nice to see that your free media is working ok. Free is always good.

The BW-12B1ST is a LiteON iHBS112 rebadge.

Which firmware have you currently got? Use DiscInfo (http://discinfo.rpc1.org/) or Nero Info Tool to find out.

What’s the problem with playing BluRays?

Which lite-on iHBS112-29 or iHBS112-04 ? Newegg has this for $79.99 with $20 rebate. I want to get the Lite-on iHBS112-29 or it’s clone that can be flashed to a lite-on.

They should be iHBS112-29/37, but then with the recent influx of iHBS112-04 models, who knows if the newly manufactured models are still using the original drive revision or maybe they too switched to the -04 model …

Worse still, as Dean said in the other thread, even if it is the original model you might still not be able to crossflash it depending on its manufacturing date…

I’m told that the ASUS-Sony rebadges can be crossflashed if they were made before July 2011.

I guess the only way to know for sure is to risk it, and if the Flash Utility reports that the drive is unsupported return it back for a refund?

If the Drive was made after July 2011, it still can be crossflashed to iHBS112-04.

Thanks CVS. That kind of hard to check since I am buying online. What about iHBS212-08 ? I get confused with the numbers after the -, like 04. 08, 29 and so forth.

I am looking to get the best Lite-on I can buy for quality BD-R writing performance and reliable disc quality scan. Of course build quality of the drive itself is also important. My current drives are Pioneer BDR-205 and Smasung SH-B123L. Thanks.

Doesn’t the iHBS112-04 uses a different chip and therefore is different than the iHBS112-29 ?

Do you have a preference for burn quality between 112-29 and 112-04? I have not burned quite enough w/-04 to be sure. So far, -29 seems a little better? -04 does seem to report slightly higher error rates than -29 for me when scanning

I think they have changed in EEPROMs and not in chips. iHBS112-29 can flash with both CL0K and PL01 firmwares but iHBS112-04 can not flash with CL0k firmware.

#14

I read user review at Newegg that the ASUS 12B1ST is slower in ripping than the 29, so that means the ASUS is the 04 ?

Have you tried to burn same discs on a same Drive (iHBS112-29) with differnet (CL0K and PL0x) firmwares?

Yes I have, but not a large number. Do not see a difference with firmware. PL01 -04 seems to burn with slightly higher errors on the same FTI SL media vs PL01 -29. But could be just my drives. Wondered if you noticed any difference?

hi, just bought an Asus BW-12B1ST blu-ray burner from ewegg, OptiDriveControl says the firmware version is 1.03
I was wondering what is about the lite on re-badge thing and the firmware and how to determine what model this
Asus is a re-badge of and how it would conditions quality of blu-ray read or burn?

the complete Eeperom back up bin image could be downloaded from the link :http://www.2shared.com/file/0Tk6xQLL/103.html

Sorry for reviving such a old thread, but I just got this drive very recently (within the past 3 days). I was wondering if anyone so far had any good or bad experiences with theirs?

According to DISC Info, I have:
FW: 1.03
Vendor Specific: 2011/04/18 21:48 (which I assume is the date and time it was manufactured)
Drive region status: Lock Detected
Region status: not set (i haven’t bothered)

You’ll need to use the unlocked flasher method. See this similar thread, which discusses the issues such crossflash involves in a bit more detail: http://club.myce.com/f87/asustek-bw-12b1lt-bd-writer-323344/

In your case you could flash your drive with the PL01 firmware dump which was posted in the forum a while back and then you could update to the latest PL06 using the official LiteOn flasher.
