ASUS 1814BLT not working properly

[qanda]This thread is about the Asus DRW-1814BLT. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]After about a year of acting normally this unit is unable to burn disks reliably. Nero won’t make data disks at all (see screenshot) and will only copy a CD 20% of the time. It often fails to recognise writable media too.

I’m using XP Pro and up to date with service releases.
Dual core cpu with 3Gb RAM - it’s a SATA drive btw.
All other bits on the computer seem to be working normally.

So far I’ve uninstalled the drive in Device Manager and let Windows add it back in. The system says I’ve got the best driver (Microsoft 5.1.2535.0).

Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks

This post has been lonely for quite a long time now - has no-one got any ideas?

The unit will burn copies of disks but I just tried burning some pictures from the hard drive and although the files are listed on the CD they must be corrupted as Photoshop reports that they all have truncated marker segments. A similar “cannot open files” type of error occurs if I try the XP routine and put them in the CDRW folder.

Extensive Googling hasn’t provided any useful information either.
