Aspect ratio

Hi all. I’m fairly new to the HDTV scene,. I have a Panasonic tcp-42s1 plasma and a Panasonic DMR-EZ475V DVD/VCR combo, both connected with HDMI to an HD cable box. The TV looks great when I watch OTA HD. However, when I watch widescreen DVD’s there are black bars top & bottom. I believe I have everything set up correctly. TV- aspect ratio Full. DVD/VCR
16:9 480p TV size, Please advise if I’m missing something.

No expert here, but I’ll give it a shot…
The DVD(s) in question are most likely a 16:9 (2.35:1) letterboxed anamorphic widescreen release…Meaning it is 2.35 wider than it is taller…
WS sets are 16:9 (1.78) AR(Aspect ratio)…In order to display correctly the player will add letterbox(black bars, top and bottom to fill the screen…This should explain it far better than me…
