Are there downsides of SB/HT/OS/OHT?

I would like to know are there any downsides of these features? (talking only about DVD disks)
Smart Burn
Hyper Tuning
Over Speed
Online Hyper Tuning

I have LH-20A1H, and enabled Smart burn/HT/OS/OHT.

Ok, I know some downsides of Over Speed.

  1. error while recording(=failed);
  2. Takes 2.5x time longer to record a disk (takes about 13 mins at 18x);
  3. Disc may not be readable even after successful recording;(strange, but DVD player had no problems with it, but DVD-RW’s did)
  4. Quality may be very bad.

Thats all i know.
If you know more downsides of all these features, not only OS, please share your knowledge with me (and everyone who reads this)

What firmware and brand of discs are you using?

Drive firmware is LL07

DVD’s were CMC MAG M01 (“ACME”) max speed with OS 18x

Those discs vary in quality from what i’ve seen in the past. Can you find some Tayio Yuden or Verbatims to try?

Also you have to play with those settings some to see what works best for you.

Says key medium error but you don’t have a lot of RAM left to use for burning. Are you multi tasking?
What happens when you burn them at say 12X?

Everything is perfect at 16x, no matter what disc.

Hmm. About that RAM. I have disabled paging file so theres only 768MB.

I think i can try writing again, but with page file enabled(but not today, I’m out of discs)

And no way would I overspeed CMC MAG M01, if anything I’d burn it slower (8x or 12x) :slight_smile:

Strange things happen :slight_smile:

With MCC004 disc that failed. Somehow Nero finalized session at the point where error occurred(DVD was unaccessible if i try to enter) so i opened Nero and chose to continue multi session disc.

This time page file was enabled.

It took 5 mins to record 3500MB at 18x speed this time. Rotation speed was slowing down few time while it was recording.

Quality test: Actually this is the best quality I have ever achieved.
As you can see, the spike is actually at the place where error occurred (~700MB)

What I am thinking about, is that, error occurred when i tried to burn DVD at 18x of that manufacturer for the first time.

Same may be with CMC MAG M01. First failed, second burn was very long, maybe next will be better.

why should they exist if there’s no advantage using them?

mcc004 @20x with LL0C (fb-eos), finest quality.
total PIE ~11000 and PIF ~200 with max. 4.

i have enabled every feature and don’t see any downsides.

every verbatim +r 16x here is mcc004, so there’s no way i would buy other blanks.
verbatim are even one of the cheapest here. (50pcs cakebox, 12€ or US$16.5)

This is not a good idea.

But windows are running like 50% faster without paging file. If this problem was because of lack of RAM then it happened 1st time to me.

SmartBurn features are designed for DL burns according to their description, and I get best SL burn results with SmartBurn disabled.
