Are all the 20X drives extremely fast at ripping DL dvd?

My Aopen 1648 dvd rom has seen better days, nowhere near as fast as it used to be, looking for a good drive to take over for ripping… do all the 20x based liteon drives meet or beat it? What firmware are people using on these newer drives to accomplish it?

I’ve never owned an Aopen 1648, so I can’t really compare my 20x Lite-On LH-20A1P to it. The LH-20A1P (available at Wal-Mart) does rip up to 12x with double layer, though, unlike some drives that only do 8x. IME, it seems to rip pressed discs a lot faster than the Pioneer 111, and just slightly faster than the two BenQ 1655s that I have in external enclosures.

As for firmware - I personally just use the KLOA firmware that it came with. Good stuff.

It’s sort of hard to generalize which drive is the fastest ripper. Are you talking about transcoding (compression) also or just putting an entire movie onto your hard drive? Plus, some DVDs take longer to rip than others depending on how the movie is authorized, what kind of copy protections are on it etc…

Anyway, here is an example of transcoding comparison done by my friend. 20A1H did a good job.

@0301orih - thanks for the handy comparisons!

I like my LH-20A1H for ripping, as mentioned it does a good job.

As we see in the list, NEC/Optiarc does quite well too (even my older ND-4551A is a fast little ripper).

You are very welcome Arachne. I also use my 20A1H as a main ripper. I thought about getting the NEC 7170 many times though…

Thanks 0301orih.

aka DW1640/EW164B. Almost 2 years old drives with Nexperia chipset haven’t any problems to keep the speed up either…
