IBM protects Oasis promo CD

Afrayem pointed us to an article at news.com about Oasis' new album containing a copy protection. IBM and media company Spero Communications are planning to release a free promo CD which will be distributed to 1.7 million readers of The (U.K.) Sunday Times this weekend.

The CD will be embedded with IBM's Electronic Media Management Systems (EMMS), which digitally protects music, video and other files. Using an embedded player, recipients of the Oasis CD will be able to register online and obtain a digital key that unlocks the songs. In April, IBM unveiled a new version of EMMS designed to digitally protect text, image, video PDF and Open-eBook files. The first version of the software, released last year, only handled music files.

The new album will hit the streets on July 1st. With this promo cd you can listen to some new songs for 4 times.

For more information about the technology Electronic Media Management System (EMMS) take a look at these pages on the IBM website.
