Have recently changed my DVD-ROM drive from a Toshiba 1712 to the AOpen 1648AAP because the chance arose and because of the good reviews/feedback for the AOpen.
What a mistake!
Ripping speed (CSS DVD Video) is good, even without any 'tricks'. Are using latest firmware (1.07).
The drive tray/drawer frequently fails to open upon pressing the eject button. Sometimes this can be overcome by using the 'properties - eject' menu function through 'My Computer' (WinXP SP2). However, sometimes even this won't work. This means I have to use the insert paperclip method, and this is occurring rather often. Not only is it annoying bit I'm afraid it could cause damage. Yet at other times, everything works fine. Unsure if there is a pattern.
Could the drive be faulty? (surely a strange fault? Unsure if it happened or not when I first got the drive and before I updated it's firmware*). Could it be a configuration problem? (on the AOpen official forum it's been suggested to others to change the master/slave setting etc. - in my case it's on master as it's the only drive on the IDE cable). Is it Windows or the VIA IDE drivers?
Any help would be appreciated.
