Anyone know where I can get a good file converter?

I am looking for a good file converter, preferrably free, but I would be willing to consider something that isn’t too expensive.

I have some vlc files that I want to convert to avi and I have tried a few programs but after converting the files the quality is pretty horrendous. Is there not a program that will keep the quality the same, before and after the conversion? I also have a few videos that I would like to splice together. I have had the same issue after splicing them together the quality drops dramatically. I would like to keep the quality the same if possible. Thanks for any suggestions that you may be able to throw my way.

What format are your ‘vlc’ files in? DVD(mpeg2)…Need some details, to keep us from guessing…
Just keep this in mind, when [B]converting[/B] from one format to another format, you will [B]not[/B] “keep the quality the same” as original…However, you will be able to retain the quality as high as possible with the right tools/methods…

Sorry about that…they’re mpeg4.

Is their a walkthrough on here where I can learn what tools and methods are needed to retain as much of the quality as possible?

FAVC converts to DVD video Whappo. The original poster wants to convert mpeg4 to avi.

For that conversion I’d probably use Xvid4PSP (which is a versatile converter program…don’t let the name fool you). http://www.winnydows.com/news.php

Yeah, besides xvid4PSP, there’s avidemux, which is a pretty darn good app as well…
