Take a look at this discussion over at the Slysoft forums: https://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?63079-Country-code-locked-disc

Basically, a company is trying to make certain releases of movies, in this case anime, exclusive to one country, even though other countries share the Blu-ray region code for that country. This is the only example I’ve seen, but I haven’t paid much attention to this before today.

TBH I don’t think this will have much effect as a protection system as it’s trivially easy to bypass.

I’ve only just heard of it and SlySoft has it fixed already.

Presumably if there any problems with this though you can also edit the Country Code manually with editing software.
