Any new Pioneer drives on the horizon?

Hi guys

I was thinking to get a Pioneer BDR-S09J from Japan
However, as you may know, this isn’t exactly cheap.
So, before “investing” in it, I’d like to know if and when a new batch of drives is coming out, let’s call them BDR-210 or BDR-S10J

Is it silly to assume an S10 would be so much better than an S09 in terms of functionality and compatibility?

I haven’t heard of any new ones, but I’m not really in the loop for new optical drives.

It seems that all of the Pioneer drives are now made in China. There may not be an overwhelming reason to spend a lot of money on the 209 J version. http://club.myce.com/f105/tsst-has-stopped-manufacturing-optical-drives-341219/#post2774884

I don’t think there have been any real improvements in the Pioneer drives for quite some time. All pretty good, and we’ve been recommending them for years, but I haven’t noticed any great preference for the newer models among the guys still testing them.

Consider this a bump, so that one of them might notice this thread and give you some more information.

that honestly came as a surprise. I assumed Pioneer drives and “good” BD-R media were still absolutely MIJ, I guess I was wrong
I am too out of the loop

Not to diss China though. It ain’t the 90’s anymore but sure I would have loved that extra peace of mind

thanks a lot Kerry
much appreciated

I too have not seen a significant difference between the BDR-209 and BDR-S09J drives. Other than cosmetic differences, you’re fine with either one for burning purposes.

Pioneer’s latest models have recently shown and available only in Japan professional outdoor models Pioneer BDR-PR1 MA-U and Pioneer BDR-PR1-MC-U …
Unfortunately, the price is shocking …

thanks a lot guys for your inputs

wow, didn’t know about those drives even if I usually am up to date with everything Japan
The MA is still available on Amazon for up to a grand depending on configuration:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?__mk_ja_JP=%E3%82%AB%E3%82%BF%E3%82%AB%E3%83%8A&url=search-alias%3Dcomputers&field-keywords=BDR-PR1MA

The MC has all but disappeared. They usually refer to it as JIS Z 6017, and those very few places where available it has a list price of 3 grands…crazy

@jade, since you’re here…:bigsmile:
I should have used the search function before opening this thread
I pretty much got not only it would be silly to wait for a successor, but actually many people still prefer the 207 and 208 over the 209, at least those Made in Japan
From your experience is there a major quality difference between the formers and the latter?

also…not really worth opening a new thread about this
I understand this is currently the best 50GB media?
https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B0056DV0L4/
though not as good as old Panasonic

when it comes to 25GB media, is this good?

In my experience the 208 series drives produce better burns than the other two. Not by a lot, but noticeable. If you can get a 208/S08, go for it.

Hard to tell from the picture; would need to know the MID. The best 25GB media are MIJ Panasonics (MID MEIRA1). I get mine from DigiStor.

thanks a bunch
finding a new 208 will be hard, but I’ll try
they usually sell in the ¥20-25000 region plus fees, shipping and all
