*another* Plextor 716A speed problem

I used to achieve fairly fast speeds while burning at 16x… usually around 12 mins… however lately it’s been taking almost 30 minutes!

Average Write Rate: 2,813 KB/s (2.0x)
Maximum Write Rate: 4,133 KB/s (3.0x)

That just seems TOO slow??

I’ve read the plextor FAQ and read about the “PIO”, and i followed the suggestions, however in one of my channels, i selected “DMA if available” but PIO was still selected, however all the others had either DMA 4,5, or 6. not sure what channel the plextor is on. Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on how to burn faster? Thanks in advance!

Media used: Verbatim DVD+R 16x (Disc ID: MCC-004-00)

There is a guide to setting DMA located in the optical drive forum. It’s a sticky post, so it’s always at the top of the screen.

You will need to enable DMA on all of your drives if you want to burn at anything higher than the 2x-4x speeds you are currently seeing.

This is a DMA problem. The fastest way is probably to uninstall the IDE channel the drive is connected to and then reboot.

#4

I’ve tried two solutions listed in the above thread, but no succuss so far.
I want to try uninstalling the IDE channel, but how can i tell wich one my plextor is on? Some people have said i shouldn’t do uninstall the IDE channel my OS is on, some say it doesnt matter… well does it?

#5

Also, what’s strange is that i remember being able to burn at higher speeds previously, just not recently. does upgrading firmware somehow reset that?

#6

Maybe one good old defragmenting would do something good.

And check if HDD is also working for some other process while burning.

#7

bad IDE cable can also cause these issues…trying a known good one is also another troubleshooting step…

#8

Uninstalling both IDE Channels seems to have worked! Thanks to all those who replied!

The burning speeds have gotten much better!

Duration: 00:06:22
Average Write Rate: 13,406 KB/s (9.7x)
Maximum Write Rate: 16,751 KB/s (12.1x)

Do these speeds sound about average?
