Another "illegal disc" error mystery

vbimport

#1

I have a Sony DRU-710A, with which I’m able to burn DVDs about 30% of the time. The remaining 70% of the time I make coasters, even after the Nero Express simulation has completed successfully. It fails after burning around 30 Mb. The error is always “illegal disc”.

The media: TDK DVD-R 8x. I checked the media with DVD Identifier, and the manufacturer’s code is TDK rather than a third party.

The drive: I’ve upgraded to the latest Sony firmware.

The OS: I’m using Window XP Media Center Edition 2005

Nero: I’m using Nero 6 Ultra Edition 6.6.0.16.

After reading several other posts on this issue, I removed InCD with Nero’s removal tool.

I also used the Registry Checker and Driver CleanTool to eliminate any competing drivers.

Here’s my log:

@ captivated
Welcome:). My feeling is your drive doesn’t like that media. The MID of TTG02(your stuff) is known to be quite inconsistent in quality. Media selection for your drive is the most important(and under-rated) aspect of getting consistently good burns. IMHO, there are only a few media MID’s worth using. My favorite is YUDEN000T02  . They are 8X+R rated discs made by Taiyo Yuden and are available under many different name brands. Be careful, tho, as a specific brand name can have different MIDs. A very popular source for T02 media in the USA is the FujiFilm 8X+R cakeboxes with ‘Made-In-Japan’(MIJs) printed near the UPC symbol. The FujiFilms that have ‘Made-In-Taiwan’ near the UPC are NOT T02s! They go on sale at Best Buy every month or so for ~ $0.40/disc  . Verbatim is another pretty good name brand to trust.

Your drive is a rebadged Liteon 1633, which can be flashed to a 1653. You might want to look around the Liteon Forum, read the Liteon Forum FAQS and look for threads concerning your drive and see what results other people are getting with various media MIDs and firmware.

You can also check your burn results with Kprobe 2.4.2 BLER scans(scanned at 4x scan speed the forum standard for comparison). You can read Interpreting PI/PO error scans to find out what these graphs mean. PI/PO is now referred to as PI/PIF. Roughly, PImax<280; PIFmax<4. Attaching disc quality scans to your post of the offending discs will help us help you.

DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 6Y160M0 YAR5 aar1210 Port 4 ID 1 DMA: Off
OtherPeripheral : ADAPTEC HostRAID 1.0 aar1210 Port 4 ID 15 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 d347prt Port 5 ID 0 DMA: Off
You might want to check your DMA for these items, tho I think this might be just a reporting error for your RAID setup(?) or your NForce chipset(?)

Whew…I hope that wasn’t too much information. If you have further problems, you might be better served in the Liteon Forum as I don’t think this is a Nero issue

Please has hit it on the head - Media.

‘CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM . INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT’

I have to disagree, I’ve never had a problem with the TTG02 or the TDK02 and have roughly burnt over 200 or more of them with a 100% hit rate. (yes I’m a bit of a TDK fanboy - but theres almost no TY in Australia and Verbatim is way overpriced)
When you say the MID came up as TDK, was there anything else such as numbers?

#4

The disc is a TTG02.

Interesting sidenote: I flashed the drive with 1653S - CSTR firmware to see if it was the Sony firmware, intolerant of the TDK disc. Now it completes the burn process and the disc seems to play fine in my Sony settop DVD player…but not in my computer DVD drives. Even the burner, though it can read the files, won’t autoplay its own disc. Go figure.

#5

Another step forward: I reflashed using the Codeguys’ patched Sony BYX4 firmware (which, following their suggestion, I further patched with the Omnipatcher suggested settings). Now the drive seems to be operating flawlessly. But I’ve only burned four or five discs. I’ll update the thread again if I have problems. Hopefully this information will benefit someone else.

#6

Go here for the patched firmware I mentioned:

http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/dvdrw/Sony.710A.BYX4.patched-cf-mcled.rar

…and go here for Omnipatcher:

http://codeguys.rpc1.org/patchers.html

#7

…And I’m back to burning coasters intermittenly. So the alternate firmware did not solve the problem. I can only assume that my Sony / Liteon just doesn’t like this media. I’ve ordered a 100-pack of TY.

Sigh.

Thanks for the feedback, all.

#8

@ captivated
Thanks for keeping us posted…it is helpful. Any Kprobe scans to see how good the successes are? Glad to hear you are making progress, even if it was short-lived. I am happy that you are ‘hearing the calling’ of TY’s:). You won’t be sorry.
If you experience several bad burns, you can try using the EEPROM Utility to ‘reset learnt media’ memory. Check the ‘readme’ for info.

#9

I’m posting both here and on the LiteOn/Sony board, since this may or may not be a Nero problem.

Latest update: I reflashed with 1653 CSOP firmware, modded with OmniPatcher. This time Nero Recode burned one disc successfully. The second also burned successfully (or so claimed Recode) but the resulting disc won’t play in any drive I own. I used Recode a third time but used a different model of disc–though it’s also TDK branded. The info on it:

Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [TDK Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [TDKG02000000]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]

The resulting disc died early in the burn. I’m trying three more ideas picked up by reading various threads: (1) reset learnt media memory, (2) use OmniPatcher to limit burns on the TTG02 to 4x, since another member said that it helped with these Sony drives, and (3) set fire to the drive using lighter fluid and a blowtorch. Oh, sorry–internal monologue slipping out. I meant to say that my last idea is to use the TY media which will arrive tomorrow in the post.

Anyway, here’s the log from the final Recode burn with the TDKG02 media mentioned above:

Finally this mess is over with. I’m using the LiteOn 1653S firmware in my 710A, with the standard patches in Omnipatcher. But I don’t think this was a firmware problem–I think the burner just didn’t like the TDK discs.

Now I’m using the TY discs and I’ve had absolutely no problems at all.

This was an interesting lesson:

–Sony showed TDK discs on their approved list;
–the Sony firmware had setttings for both types of TDK media that I used;
–other people with 710A burners successfully used the same discs…

…but replacing the discs, which is the last thing I tried, cured the problem immediately.

@ captivated
Good to hear the TY’s are working well for you.
Thanks for posting back.

I am running XP SP2 (all updates & such), Lite-On SOHW 1633 BSOS, etc…

I noticed that when I install NERO (recently updated to 7), after MUSICMATCH (v10)…

*** KABLOOEY! *** Nero magically doesn’t work anymore?! Whoa. My only solution (after scouring the internet, finding this site, among others)… De-install Musicmatch, reinstall Nero… and it’s back to burning…

I’m sure that there are some conflicting drivers or somtin’ in there that don’t like eachother – much like Roxio and Nero… or WordPerfect and MS Word… It’s natural to be enemies on the same grounds that way – Montagues & Capulets… Hatfield’s & McCoys… Napster and Metallica… etc.

I doubt this will fix your problem – but I never thought Musicmatch would be a culprit until I pulled my last hair outta my head and thought… hey…

Good luck.

#14

Having experienced the illegal disc error myself, the post re uninstall musicmatch worked.I had just updated from version 8 to V9 and got the same error.however all I did was restore to a date prior to the V9 update and hey presto it all works fine now. Thanks again because I too was about to pull all my hair out but having it cut short means you cant get hold of it!

#15

I’m glad that my post assisted someone out there. I would presume that there is some type of burning .dll or ASPI (or something else god-awful that I nor others have time to figure out) that conflicts.

I believe from what research I have conducted – it is only XP and it is only MusicMatch version 10. Your testimony furthers that cause and reasoning. Version 9 must have difference of programming – it does have burning software engineered into it, however it obviously doesn’t conflict with Nero. Hmmm… Any NERO engineers or MUSICMATCH people out there wish to comment???

Again – glad to assist. No Kudos for Musicmatch!
