[qanda]This thread is about the Lite-On SOHW-1633S. Click here to see full specs[/qanda][B]I have this drive, but I'm not using it. I'm currently using a Memorex LightScribe drive.
With that said, I started having issues with the Lite-On drive. It started refusing to read most DVD's and CD's. So, I went and got the Memorex drive, and after a while, the same thing happened. I was at a loss to understand the issue.
Now, here is what I found. When a person buys a new drive and it's packed in a box and inside the same box is a little plastic bag with a sound cable and a ribbon cable. In my desk, there is a side drawer and I have several of those little packs of cables. All of those were the standard 40-pin cables. The thing is, I didn't bother to open any of those bags as I have lots of cables laying around. I was not using a 40-pin cable on the burner. I was using an 80-pin hard drive cable.
I decided to experiment and use a 40-pin cable on the burner. To my amazement, it started working again, just fine. I am now wondering if I put the Lite-On drive back in I would have the same results.
I've never been much on Memorex. Their media doesn't even make good Frisbee material. So, I'll swap the drives and see what happens. I know many of you would say to put it back in. It seems Lite-On is much higher up the quality list than i suspected.
