Ala42: MCSE for the BenQ DW1640?

Hi… I was wondering if you could get MCSE to work with the BenQ DW1640 firmware (BSBG as on the BenQ website).

The drive’s been released in Singapore (http://forums.hardwarezone.com/showthread.php?t=1010684), so the local cd/dvd freaks there (e.g. eleewhm :bigsmile: ) might want to test its 16x overspeeding capability. Presently I think because the firmware is beta so there’s no overspeeding at the moment.

The drive will be supported, but there are some issues that have to be solved, first. All tables are stored in a memory area, which can not be directly patched, so I have to adapt the method already used in MCSE for the 1620 +R table. The -R table has no direct write speed indication anymore, so I have to dig a bit into the firmware. There are no +RW MIDs in the firmware at all, so the next firmware might look different.

Seems the overspeeding capabilities were removed from the firmware in the released retail version, the earlier beta firmware tested definitely supported overspeeding. Sorry, the firmware version has to be blanked out.

  1. Improve the writing performance for DVD+R DL media at 8x speed.
  2. Fix Windows only detect master drive when 2 same firmware drives are connected.
  3. Add solution to avoid OPU failure caused by coil loose issue.

Note - the following burns were made with an early ala42 modded firmware and NOT the retail firmware.

Still it seems that lots of changes had been done in the firmware, 12x burns look really strange with that dip just beyond the 2.5 GB mark. This definitely wasn’t there in the early firmware.

Just doesn’t look right, does it - any ideas, ala42?

It appears that “swap2” is working better. This is “Verbatim Chameleon 4x” YUDEN00 T02 (“fake” Yuden media from Yuden if you will, or T02s that have failed QC most likely) burned at 16x, 5:44.

The PIFs are a lot more stable, and there are no POFs :). There are some PIF spikes on the latter 2 GB, but that seems to be a characteristic of all my 16x burns so far on this drive.

“swap2” doesn’t seem to be working for RICOHJPN R02 though (set to 16x, but burned at 12x, ~6:25:-
