Adding a media code to 811 firmware

I’m pretty sure this has been asked before, but I’ve yet to find an easy to follow
guide for doing this.

I bought cheap Kodak DVD+R media from Future Shop. The code on the discs are MEDIAID 001. (scarry, isen’t it?)

They burn fine, read back fine in my stand alone and dvd-rom drive, but the Kprobe scans are horrible. Maybe due to the generic write strategy used…

Could anybody here explain, maybe with screenshots as an example, how to edit a media code that i’m not using to replace it with my Kodak DVDs code?

Since I was dumb enough to purchase a 100 spindle, I would like to be able to find a good write strategy for them with Omnipatcher swaps…

I’m using HS0R (very good btw, I can overspeed a few different brands without any need to swap strats!)

Thanks…

Can you use something like DVD Identifier and post the media code block. I need to know if there is a space after the 001 as some -R media codes are 12 characters long padded with space(s).

Here is the information…

Here’s a flasher version of HS0R with the media code MEDIA ID001. I replaced the PVCR001002 4x media code. I don’t know how well it will work with your media but you can always change it with OP anyway.

Enjoy.

I’m sorry… does it matter if you put in the new media code in as a DVD-R disc, as opposed to DVD+R?

My blanks are +R…
Thanks again!

Oops, yes it does. Silly me. :o

I’ve posted a new version of HS0R with the +R media code MEDIA ID001 (same link above). I replaced the BeAll000P40 media code.

I brought a tub of phillips 8x +R C08

the only write strat in all f/w is only for phillips 081, i did 3 burns @4x and kprobes were horrible so i changed the strat for phillips 081 to cmc mag E01 but there was no difference at all, could this be because of the media code C08? do i need to change the name 081 to C08?

i can only burn @2x with these and get sky high pi`s and there is no strat at all for fuji.

both of these are supported for the 812s ect should i of load these to a freind who`s got a 812? or is there an easy fix.

thanks acko

Yes, or any other entry you do not need. You can then use omnipatcher to map the entry to another strategy, the main question is which is the best to use. If you want to try it, burn at least 2 DVDs with the new strat.

Same story here.

That depends on how many DVDs you want to loose by looking for the best strategy. Use the search function to check if someone already has a working strat on the 811.

are you saying i need to change the name from 081 to C08? if yes could you explane how.
i think the cmc mag E01 strat should be ok as the code is the same.
i dont mind wasting a few of the phillips +R`s as i can get them localy 50@£20.

as for the fujis iam not to bothered about them i only got 25 and i think my freind could put them to better use.

To adjust media that is unknown to the firmware, you have to patch in by hand (hex edit), and than strategy swap - if you wanted to use the Fujifilm03, the patch and swap to try would be TYG02 - since that was report fairly successful for the 1213S (also lacks Fujifilm03).

I’ve hand edited, but you do need to be familiar with a hex editor to do it.

i wouldn`t now were to start with a hex editor, so unless someones got the time to help me through the prosses or if its a real brain scratcher could they edit the f/w for me?

thanks acko

PM me your email address

Thanks  I did a fews trys, but the PIs are still in the 1000s… Guess the media is just plain garbage…

Whilst on this topic (sort of), I recently got a batch of “Record” -R discs, identified by DVDInfo as GC003.

They are supposed to be 8X; I have this 411s, modded to a 811s, with HSOR, but it won’t burn these discs at anything more than what seems like 2X!!! Normally, this drive takes about 14mins to burn a full DVD, with these discs it’s double that time!

Wasn’t necessarily expecting 8X burns, but why only super sluggish 2X, and can you suggest or know of a remedy to at least get back to a 4X … with these discs???

I note that the media id code speed does not come below … ???

Try some other strategies. I didn’t really expect the one I replaced to be the right one for your media.

Try:
PRODISCR02
PRODISCR03
YUDEN000T02
RICOHJPNR01
MCC002

You never know your luck.

You will never get 8x because your drive can only burn -R at a max or 4x anyway.

Here’s a flasher version of HS0R with the -R Media code GSC003. I replaced the GSC002 media code, which might even work without a strategy switch. If it doesn’t try some other startegies and see how it goes.

thanks to ala42 for adding the code and thanks to the code guys for OP.

i can now burn C08`s not perfect but far better than before below are a sample of kprobes.

1st HSOP no change to phillips code.3rd burn
2nd HSOR phillips C08 added.1st burn
3rd HSOR phillips C08 changed to CMC MAG E01.1st burn

Make a second burn with the last setting to see if the drive has learned something.

Bloody hell ! Why are you buying those cheap arsed Kodak DVDs ? They SUCK !

Since you are a future shop, you would notice they have the memorex +R and Maxell +R, those are RICOHJPNR01 stick to those, and steer clear from the KODAK CRAP.

Thanks for the results, acko.

Out of curiosity, what code was replaced when C08 was added?
