Hmm … now that you mention that, I remember a USB thumbdrive doing something like that … it melted/blew a chunk out of the outer plastic casing, and one of the IC/flash chips had a big crater … and I found a sizable chunk (1/2 the size of my smallest finger nail) on the floor later.
It really gives perspective about what 2.5W of power can actually accomplish
I can’t actually remember whether it was actually an A-Data thumb-drive (because I’ve had so many thumb drives).
