SONY NEC Optiarc AD7580A
is the drive I put in my Toshiba laptop to replace a Pioneer IDE drive that couldn't produce error-free burns anymore.
After installing the drive, I discovered that the laptop wouldn't recognize or power the drive: the screen would display CD-ROM ERROR at boot.
I e-mailed Optiarc USA and they sent me the attached utility that allows changing from CSEL to Master, Slave, or RCS.
It turned my $50 paperweight into a functioning DVD writer, and I was even able to use my old bezel.
The utility was too big to upload: it is available here: http://nightalon.googlepages.com/Chgslave.zip
Note that most laptops probably don't need this change. I don't know what CSR does. If your hard drive has an IDE connector, you will probably need to set the DVD drive to Slave; if your hard drive has a SATA connector, you will probably need to set the DVD drive to Master just as I did on my Toshiba Tecra M7.
