Which one would you recommend? The NEC drive seems a good choice, especially if crossflashed to DH-20A3H. The Samsung I don’t know a lot about. Anyway, what I need is a PATA drive, with DVD-RAM support, lightscribe and good reading/scanning capabilities. Burning quality is important too, mostly for Audio CDs, but I won’t burn at max speeds and I try to use good quality media, so it’s not that critical to have the best burner.
I can not say a lot to the NEC burner. But I have the Samsung SH-S202N in an external enclosure and the results so far are looking good for me. I have this drive not for a long time, but at the moment I do not have lot complains about my Samsung SH-S202N. I do not have any problems with DVD RAM and the Panasonic driver so far. Also my SH-S182M does not make any problems. I use WinXP with both drives. My SH-S182M also worked with DVD RAM under Vista with no problems (amnd no additional driver setup). But after damage of my Vista system drive I did not reinstalled it since Vista is kind of useless compared to XP.
The quality scan functionality for DVDs is not as good as the scan functionality of my Plextor PX-760A, but the scan results should be usable to find out if the burn / media is good or not. I did not check the CD-R scan functionality. But I remember that the CD scans of the SH-S182M are not really usable. I think I read this here in this forum…
If you want good audio CD burns I’d recommend a Plextor Premium II In this thread you can find a lot burns / scans of all kind of CD-R media made with the Plextor Premium / Premium II. The Plextor Premium / Premium II is able to do all quality scans for CDs you need.
