Acer Aspire 5100 DVD replacement

[qanda]This thread is about the Panasonic UJ-850. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]I’ve been trying to buy a replacement DVD drive for an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop. This drive is a Panasonic model UJ-850. The average cost on-line seems to be about +/-$140. However, I found it for as low as $60. This vendor mentioned that it’s possible that Acer may have proprietary firmware on their drives.
Of course Acer technical support is not giving up any free info. Can anyone confirm if Acer places any special firmware on these drives which would prevent me from purchasing an aftermarket replacement drive?
The bottom line is I’m trying to restore the operating system and cannot do so without this drive.

Welcome to the forum. :flower:

I would try replacing the drive with this one:

All OEM laptop drives have special firmware, but it’s not anything that prevents you from using a replacement. The bigger issue is whether the drive will fit, physically. Plus, there aren’t as many IDE drives available anymore, because everything is moving to SATA.
