Abused 451S, can it be revived?
My 451S has been abused by trying every version of firmware ever released in it (many times back and forth) and by many firmware patches (some that went very wrong). It had got to the point where my burn quality was lousy. code65536 would produce brilliant burns using the same drive firmware and media type, but mine would fail to read and/or have high KP scans. It was frustrating. So I decided to try and correct the problem hoping it wasn't a hardware fault. It has been reported that the Liteon writers might learn during the first few burns. Some have said three, some think more and some think that it is all a bunch of nonsense. So, I thought it would be fun to create this thread and show you how I got along.
I decided to revert to my original eeprom that I saved the day I got the drive (thanks to reading CDF before getting it :)). I also reverted back to GS0F - 451S@851S as it is reported to do the best DVD+R 8x burns without any speed bounces or 8x fallback. I patched the GS0F with the 8x readspeed hack, BookType ROM as default and the write speedhack 8x on RICOHJPNR01.
I will show the first 4 burns as KP2 BLER scans. All writes were done using NE. Media used is Ricoh brand RICOHJPNR01.
The results are very interesting see attached scans.
Burn 1 and 2 saw the errors swing from the beginning to the end of the disc. Both scans, I might say, are much much better than I was getting (see before scan).
Burn 3 saw the errors back at the beginning but with lower PO and higher PI.
Burn 4 saw the PO errors drop.
The couple of burns I did after burn 4 were pretty much the same. I then switched to GS0H and started work on the burn-adjust patches.
Burn 5 is a taste of things to come (but not with the standard firmware)...same media, same drive...
After the 4 burns, there were several differences in the eeprom, even ignoring the burn log, which we now know is purely for debugging the last 4 burns. I can only believe that the fresh eeprom and these new values attributed to my now excellent burn quality.
I did most of this a few weeks ago and never got the time to post it. About 25 burns later, my burn quality is still excellent. Deep, who was having terrible burns, has tried his eeprom modified to something resembling my day 1 eeprom, and seems to be having excellent results. But there is a lot of guesswork involved...
Maybe some others with a 415S or 851S, that are experiencing terrible burns with RICOHJPNR01, might like to take the risk of trying a patched eeprom. You must provide a KP scan of your terrible burn and be capable of reading and writing your eeprom.
Thanks to code65536 for stomping his eeprom to death and Deep for being brave enough to try the new eeproms.
