I bought several years ago a NEC 3500AG that has the 2.1A firmware. Since I’m a totally noob when it comes to these firmware things, I would like to hear form you about updating the the best firmware (I’m mainly interested in media compatibility, specially regarding DL Media). I know several unofficial firmwares add features that the official doesn’t provide, however, and since I’m a newbie, I feel completely lost, even after reading the overview and FAQ threads on this forum.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
The latest firmware for this drive is 2.1B firmware.
There is an unofficial modified 2.1B firmware by Liggy which adds booktype bitsetting for DVD+R media (improving compatibility with older DVD players). You can get it here.
There have been other firmware modifications of earlier firmware that increased supported write speed for some media and perhaps improved write quality of some media, but no such modifications exist for the latest 2.1B firmware.
I would use Liggy’s 3500 bitsetting 2.1B firmware unless you absolutely positively need to have disc quality scanning on your NEC ND-3500AG, in which case you can use Liggy’s 3500 bitsetting 2.R8 firmware available from the same link as above; the 2.R8 firmware has older writing strategies and don’t support as many different DVD media as 2.1B, however.
The Liggy modifications also include faster ripping (but more noisy playback) and RPC1 patching (a.k.a. region-free).
Oh, and welcome to CDFreaks!
Having the latest firmware is usually the best thing to do.
Here you can find the latest version, 2.1B
You can see what media support was added here
If you want a full media support list, download this excel, it shows all the media supported with version 2.19. Use the link above to see what media was added after 2.19 to have a full list.
If you use your 3500 to rip DVDs I would strongly suggest you to flash the Fast -unofficial- version that can be found here
In case you need to set Booktype for increased compatibility with some dvd players or game consoles, you should flash Liggy’s 3500 bitsetting Firmware 2.1b, which I recommend, from the same link.
To flash a firmware from Liggy’s and Dee’s site, you need Binflash
This is also to use for changing the permanent booktype settings of the drive.
EDIT: Ahhh… it took me more than 25 minutes to write this! I can’t believe it. Anyway, DrageMester said it better.
Thanks for the explanations.
I’ll give a try to the 2.1b version for now and see how it behaves with the DL media.
Hi guys. I have a quick question. I need to burn with bitsetting on DVD+DL. Will the official firmware provide me that, or i need the liggy dee modified one?
Bitsetting on DVD+R-DL is already included in NEC’s official firmwares.
Just a quick question, do i have to set each time on burning software, or the burner will always set bitsetting to dvd-rom on DVD+R DL regardless of what setup i have on burning software?

Of course burning software can change the booktype settings. Nero does this for example, depending on the drive’s bitsetting capabilities and the settings. First thing I do after installing Nero is to switch the booktype settings to use the recorder settings.

Not for +R-DL.
Most NEC firmwares have the commands to manually select the booktype for this disctype.
