A few very basic questions about file extensions

I’m very new to burning movies, but i have burned apps and games.

Do avi, wmv, asf, mpg, and mpeg all play on cd’s that are played on a dvd

player?

And only VOB files play on dvd discs that play in the dvd player.

Or could you send me a link that explains all of this and more about file

extensions/codecs and what they play on?

thanks,

sk

If you have a dvd player that plays divx it will probably play avi. mpg, and mpeg.
I doubt if there are any that play wmv and asf.

Most standalone DVD players will not play .avi, .wmv, or .asf files. They will play .mpg and/or .mpeg, but the extension doesn’t cover all the bases. The encoded video file itself has to be of a certain resolution and bitrate. The standard file type for DVD video is .VOB, as defined by definition files called .IFOs (contained on each DVD). .Mpg and .mpeg files are NOT intended for DVD video. They constitute the world of VCDs (or video CDs) and come in many flavors. Do some research at www.doom9.org.
