8x Burning with 851s

I have a legit LDW-851s, which I flashed to GS0F as soon as I got it. I have some imation media (code CMC MAG F01), which is rated 4x on the package.

I was going to speedhack my drive to allow 8x burning using Code65536’s tools, because I was under the impression that it would not support burning 4x media at 8x, but when I got the list of media codes by using <getcodes GS0F.exe> (unhacked firmware), I found out that I should already be able to burn this media at 8x, if I’m reading the code correctly (0b11110).

So why won’t Nero 6 let me burn at 8x? I don’t see what speedhacking will do at this point, if the original firmware already says 8x burning is enabled.

Sorry if this has been covered already, but I’m pretty confused.

I´m not sure if we are reading the same firmware.

From what I can se in the original FW, CMC MAG F01 can only be burned @ 4X.

There are 2 CMC MAG F01 codes in your firmware thanks to ala42

nods Just like there are 2 different YUDEN000T01 codes. This is why it’s important to note the rev. ID. There’s a 0x01 Rev. ID version of CMCMAGF01 that’s already at 8x and a 0x00 Rev. ID version that’s only at 4x.

I used speedhack and burned a disk at 8x. I’ve attached the kprobe scans if anyone is interested:

Looks like a good burn. There’s a high error region in the part of the disc that was burned at 4x (the inner areas are burned at 4x to avoid spinning the disc too fast), but that seems to be a common feature of many 8x burns, and even so, the error levels don’t look that high.
