I bought in the beginning of the summer a Liteon LDW-851S. It had been manufactured in February 2004 and ran firmware GS0C.
Working well, it burned dvd's, read dvd's, cd's and whatever fairly good. Cant say if it could have run bettter since Im not experienced enough.
Recently though I got myself a dvd movie that was dual-layer. I noticed it afterwards though. Nevertheless it had problems playing in my drive. Beginning of the movie ran fine but later on there were constant pauses every 20-30 seconds.
So I thought this was a dvd fault, and decided to check it in my home cinema system. It ran very well there, and that was the point I read that it was a dual layer dvd.
THen I looked for DL info in the web, and found out that it should run well on dvd-r and other drives. It didnt read good on mine, and that got me to the point of cdfreaks web and the forum here. I read about firmwares and its updates, and at some point updated my drive to GS0K firmware. I also reinstalled WinDVD and NERO6.
It didnt help, dvd-dl could not still be read appropriately, and I then read about this 832S firmware that can be attached to 851S, with full DVD-DL support and other additions. Without much thinking about it, I installed the firmware I got from codeguys web right onto my drive. Restart and then it couldnt read DL dvd anymore at all. It read regular DVD's but DL failed. I dont know about burns since I havent tried and dont think I dare to.
Then I installed older firmware, 851S specific one, back onto my drive. Tried different versions. DL could be read again, but with major problems, constant stopping every couple of seconds. And now there were also problems with regular DVD's, having pauses every 40-50 seconds.
At that point, because of some other issues, I had to reformad my HD. Did that, installed XP SP2 and system drivers and so on. The info I got from that was that the dvd issue was not software related in any way, and I still had the same problems.
So then I went back to codeguys website, downloaded from another link supplied on the website GS0C firmware bin, flashfix'ed it and installed on my dvd drive. That got me back to the point where dvd's can be read, with those after 40-50 second pauses, but Dual Layers have still problems.
So my first question would be: "What do you people recommend I do next?"
Second would be:
"And now if I want to try the 832S one again, what should I do next? Doing the "crossflashing instructions" for GS0C firmware and then "updating to a newer firmware"?"
