851S@832S DVD-reading prob

Hello,

I flashed my 851S with >> 832S.VS0A.patched-_51S@832S << without any Omnipatcher modifications.
Afterwards I burned a couple of TayoYuden-discs (+R 4x).
Tested with kprobe (PiPo, performance), and whow - best burns ever.

Next I thought of backing up some DVDs:

-along came a spider
-the patriot
-the return of the mummie
-traffic
-training day
-what woman want

Inserting disc…

1st > along came a spyder < => ok.

2nd > the patriot <
=> drive tries to initiate the disc …
suddenly a strange sound appears, like > zing-zing, zing-zing, … < and so on.

3rd > the return of the mummie <
=> drive tries to initiate the disc …
suddenly a strange sound appears, like > zing-zing, zing-zing, … < and so on.

4th > traffic <
=> drive tries to initiate the disc …
suddenly a strange sound appears, like > zing-zing, zing-zing, … < and so on.

5th > training day <
=> drive tries to initiate the disc …
suddenly a strange sound appears, like > zing-zing, zing-zing, … < and so on.

6th > what woman want <
=> drive tries to initiate the disc …
suddenly a strange sound appears, like > zing-zing, zing-zing, … < and so on.

What the hell… Flashed back the drive to its original firmware.

Testing:

1st > along came a spyder < => ok.
2nd > the patriot < => ok.
3rd > the return of the mummie < => ok.
4th > traffic < => ok.
5th > training day < => ok.
6th > what woman want < => ok.

Flashing ‘back’ to 851S@832S with a ‘fresh’ copy from codeguys, but same results as above: zing-zing-zing-zing…

Do you have any suggestions, what’s different with my 851S ? I don’t think it’s faulty because its working properly with any 851S-firmware.

TIA

beizuhause :rolleyes:

I’m gonna repeat what I’ve said in a couple other threads.

Some drives just can’t be “overclocked” in this manner.

Many can, but some just can’t.

I have a friend whose 401S just WILL NOT WORK as an 811S. Just won’t. Nothing I do has helped. I had to be happy stopping with -R media (401S@411S).

Welcome to the wonderful world of overclocking. Sometimes that 4x single-layer drive is really just a 4x single-layer drive.

I just tried mine… works just fine with any retail DVD I put in it.

Might just be luck of the draw, bro… sorry.

Out of sheer curiosity, do you get this using the 812S US0N firmware? There is a version of the US0N firmware patched for the 851S listed under 851S on our site (this is what was formerly known as GSC2)…

What software are you using to read the discs? Is along came a spyder a DL disc or an SL disc?

thanks for your interest and help.

Is along came a spyder a DL disc or an SL disc?

This is what DVDINFOPRO tells about it:

                        Media Information

Disc Regions are 2
Media code/Manufacturer ID N/A Pressed DVD

Volume Name ALONG_CAME_A_SPIDER_EN
Application id
Implementation id Spruce Technologies
Recording Date/Time (mm/dd/yyyy) 11/12/2001 14:50:59
Format Capacity 6.88GB(7.39GB)
Book Type DVD-ROM
Media Type DVD-ROM
Data area starting sector 30000h
Data area end sector 3709E3h
Layer 0 end sector 1FD1CFh
Linear Density 0.293um/bit
Track Density 0.74um/track
Number of Layers 2
Layer Track Path direction (OTP) Opposite track path

What software are you using to read the discs?

Different ones, and all are working fine. But the point is that the mentioned 5 discs are not recognized at all: Blinking green light and that horrible sound. The same happens with certain blank media (Optodisc +RW 4x), but the drive recognized it at last. I know, Optodisc is crap, but the +RW was relabeled. Usually I use MCC and TY +R, and MKM +RW 4x. No probs with that media at all, regardless of the used fw.

do you get this using the 812S US0N firmware

I used those of your firmwares right now

and the original one I saved with LtnFlash 1.2.4 (GS0F)

What I meant was, did you encounter this problem with US0N?

That doesn’t mean it’s not software. Unless it does the same thing when the IDE lead is disconnected. Earlier versions of AnyDVD could do this when certain movies were installed. That’s why I asked…

@C0deKing
No AnyDVD DVD43 installed on my XP@SP2RC2

@code65536
I don’t know if the reading-problem first happens with US0N, because in general I use my Toshiba1612 for ripping. But assumed things started with US0N, what would that mean ? Be honest, please.

-beizuhause

I think code65536 wants you to try US0N “now” to see if the movie discs work.

Have you tried removing all startup programs and seeing if the movie discs work?

C0deKing,

you mean US0N - special 851S-named version for LDW-451S/851S drives (formerly “GSC2”), right?

I will check that as soon as I will be back at home. It’s 06:30 in the morning here in germany, and I just started my daily work. So, in a few hours I will post the result(s). CU.

Good morning. :slight_smile:

Yes that’s the one…

beizuhause and all,

I have the exact same problem.

I flashed my 851S with with 832S.VS0A.patched-_51S@832S and I modified using Omnipatcher for the following:

  1. Applied recommended tweaks
  2. Enabled auto bitsetting
  3. Enabled DVD read speed

Once I installed the FW I can read pressed DVDs (commericial DVDs) or DVDs that was burned using the patched VS0A. However, I cannot read any DVDs that were burned on my BTC 1008IM.

So I reflashed my 851S with with 832S.VS08.patched-_51S@832S (previous version) and everything works again! I am using the exact same modifications I used on VS0A.

dear code(65536|King),

you told me to flash my 851S (March 2004) with your US0N. Here we go:

-flashing US0N… success
-reboot
-inserting ‘traffic’ in drive… success
-removing disc

-maybe now 832S.VS0A.patched-_51S@832S is working ?!?

-flashing 832S.VS0A.patched-_51S@832S… success
-reboot
-inserting ‘traffic’ in drive… NO success,
that horrible sound is back and the disc isn’t initiated by the drive

My conclusion: None.
Yours ?

regards

-beizuhause

There is probably a bug in the 832S firmwares pertaining to the reading of DVDs. There were pressed reading bugs in both the VS01 and VS05 firmwares. Perhaps it wasn’t completely fixed so that under certain circumstances, it’ll still pop up? :confused:

But because 851S@812S doesn’t have this problem, I think that this isn’t a problem with _51S@8_2S in general, but a problem with the 832S firmwares in general.

I wonder how VS04 works, as that was before the whole VS05 bug mess…

I wonder how VS04 works

Flashed VS04, and reading is ok.

Whow, seems that you are on the right way, code65536 !!!
