832S Firmware upgrade VS0G issue

I was having problems reading portions of a DVD. So I upgraded my firmware from VS0A to VS0G today (that did not help with the reading). Now when I try to burn a DVD, Nero is only offering me to burn in 4X and 2.4X speeds. I have been burning this media at 8X for a long time before upgrading the firmware. The media is RIDATA 8X DVD+R (read from the label).

According to DVD Identifier, the Media Code is “DVD+R:RITEK-R03-001” and is capable of recording speeds “1X,2.4X,4X,6-8X”. So the media can handle 8X, the drive used to be able to handle 8X before firmware upgradation. Now it has reduced to a 4X burner?

Any help will be appreciated.

try this firmware: http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/832S.CG5G.patched-cf.rar

According to the output of Omnipatcher, the write speeds for this media have been set down to 2.4 and 4x only. In VS0A it has been set up to 8x writing speed. You can edit those settings on your own by using Omnipatcher, which can be found here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=97590

This media was the first one I tried on my 832S drive. It gave me very bad quality burns at 8X! So I would burn it at 4x anyway!

Based on your replies, these are my choices:

  1. Use VS0G firmware and 4X speed burning.
  2. Goback to VS0A firmware and 8X burning.
  3. Use something in between VS0A and VS0G which allows 8X burning.

What are the differences in the firmware? Is it worth the upgrade? I am now leaning on (3) considering that I have quite a few of this media with me. The rpc1.org website doesn’t seem to have any unscrambled older firmware any more. Where can I get those so I can which is the latest firmware which still allows 8X burning for my media.

My advice to you is:

Do not burn this media at 8X, with this drive. It will give you very bad quality burns!

Burn this media at 4x. Or, do not buy this media again. Or do not buy Lite-On again!

You may also give this firmware a try: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=107103 It is the thread to the firmware chok0 provided a link to.
Older fw (unscrambled) can be downloaded here: http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#SOHW-832S
As engine mentioned, there’s a certain reason, why this media has been rated down. CG5G/CY5G may give you better results since it improves the way the media is written.

I remember my late 832 VS0E did not burn this media at higher speed as 4x, and the first burn after it was replaced by a 1633 showed me why. The 1633 came with BS0C and the first burn was at 8x with this media, Ritek R03. A complete disaster, reported on my standalone as “Bad disk”. Burning at 4x was complete the opposite, a perfect burn. So follow the advise engine gave you, burn it at 4x.

I think that the Code Guys firmware has this media set to 4x max too. But I am not sure!

Anyway, burn it at 4x. After the disaster I have experienced myself, with the 832S and RITEK R03, I would do so!

OK. I will take your advice and use the newest firmware and burn it at 4X. When I use up this set of DVD’s I will probably ask for suggestions as to which RITEK/RIDATA is then the best.

Thanks for all the help guys, and I have learn’t quite a bit just by looking at all the unscrambled firmware using omnipatcher.
