i have noticed in the plextor american web site that the PX716-SA (Serial ATA) doesn't have any Digital audio out SPDIF (the 716A have). is this an disavantaged? for DAE the data is transfered on the IDE or SATA bus. the SPDIF is only for when cd audio is playing isn´t?
DAE is transferred like data over the IDE/SATA bus.
SPDIF is for audio CDs definitely, not sure what else though.
SPDIF is used to play audio directly via your soundcard. But, when you don't use this option you can of course still play audio discs. The data is then transferred over the IDE or S-ATA interface. I personally never use the digital audio out on any drive.
