708A Have the 3 firmware upgrades fixed the bugs?

Ok I have been reading all the forums for about 2 months trying to figure out which Burner to buy…Figure for now a dual burner is the best way to go…narrowed it down to the Pioneer 106 or the Plextor 708A…Like how the 106 will burn almost anything…Where the 708A was having some problems…but like the 708A’s 8X DV+R and the 4X DV+RW speeds…have the 3 firmware upgrades fixed most of the BUGS?..Found the 708A for $216 shipped the 106 for $136 shipped…has anyone seen any better prices anywhere?..Leaning towards the 708A right now I realy like it and think Plextor will get it Right…Also need to buy some media…seems to be no problem for the 106…But for the 708A???..Can anyone that has the 708A tell me what you have used and what works and what doesnt…looked at all the K-probe tests and have realy no idea what they say…just would like to know the name of some media that people have used that works…Thanks for Any help you can offer…BIG JOHN…
P.S. The people that post on these boards are the greatest…Have learned a lot from you guys and gals…Thanks

First, thanks for the nice words

Secondly: Yes with firmware 1.03 the drive is actually pretty good and I start to like it.

Discs that do still not work for me:

Some princo manufactured DVD-R
All princo manufactured DVD-RW
Ritek G04 DVD-R.

If you go with + format discs you will most likely not have any media compatibility issues at all, if you go for known brand (verbatim, maxell, tdk, memorex and taiyo yuden for example) DVD-R you should be ok as well.

I still use my Memorex dual-x (pioneer DVR-106) more than the plextor due to a bit better write quality, especially for DVD-R discs.

But both drives should serve you well.

I have burned about 30 Ritek G04 disks without any trouble at all. But then again I am also burning Memorex 4X +R consistently at 8X while others have had problems. With the 1.03 firmware this drive is rock solid for me, not a single coaster.

It was anything but rock solid for me with Memorex 4X DVD+R and 1.03 firmware. I had to revert back to 1.02 to burn the Memorex DVD+R’s. I’m not impressed yet with Plextor’s firmware upgrades. I have yet to see an 8X burn. They may fix some things, but screw others up with their firmware upgrades.

I’m now using Ricoh DVD+R (DRD-4xPC) and DVD+RW (DRWD-4X) which are on the recommended list for the drive. I find they work very well and have been readable in all the drives I tried them in, including standalone. The +R burns at 8x but I’m usually burning at 4x to be on the safe side.

I’ve tried Sony DVD-R (DMR47A) and they aren’t recognised and with Datawrite ritek g04 get coasters.

Ah, finally someone else than me that gets coasters with the datawrite/datasafe ritek G04 discs!!!

Then I’m not alone after all.

Well so much for 1.02 and Memorex 4X. Just got another Session Fixation error and a coaster. Tried Roxio 6 with 1.03 firmware and said all was fine but did not close I guess. Tried BatchDisc said it closed disc but cant read it in anything. Burned a DVD+RW with 1.03 and Nero and a DVD-R and both burned perfect. Well I’m headed to Best Buy and CompUsa to try and get a refund. I will then buy some TDK or Verbatim or just some more cheap ass house brand which seem to work perfect. What a waste of time.

Media that I’ve tested and works with firmware 1.03:

Hope this helps you. So far I haven’t had much problems with media and firmware 1.03 seems to work best for me. I would personally recommend Ricoh 4x DVD+R media or media that’s based on Ricoh 4x since these discs work very well at 8x.

Thanks Gamefreak…That is exactly what I was looking for…Now if I could just find a 708A for under $200…lol…Thanks again Big John

I also have no problems burning 8x on Memorex +r 4x (RICOHJPNR01) with 1.03. I have also burned about 20 discs of this cheap 4x -R generic media with id LONGTEN001. They burn fine at 4x but the 708a errors out reading them back around 4.1GB so I dont use them for anything larger then 4GB. Other readers like the Hitachi in my laptop can get through the whole disc (slowing down alot at the end) but the fact the 708 pukes on it probably says something about the quality of the discs past 4GB.

I would say that the majority of owners 708a are probably not having any trouble at all, since you are alot likelier to post about your frustrations with bad burns then you are about the last spindle you went through with no problems at all.

I have a spindle of 4X DVD-R Princo that wouldn’t burn on the 708A unless burned at 1X and even then there were errors. I didn’t save the code for them but the store where they were purchased is currently testing them on their burner to see if they are willing to give me a refund.

$90 Cdn. for the spindle of 50 down the tubes because I doubt this store will refund them (in spite of my buyring the Plextor there). From now on I will be name brand media rather than unmarked spindles, in addition to forking out the extra $ for +R media. :frowning:

I love the 708A, though!

After I brought my Memorex 4X (Ricoh JPNR01) back for a refund and bought these TDK on sale at CompUsa and saw they were also (Ricoh JPNR01) I thought oh no here we go again.
Well guess what, it appears that not all Ricoh JPNR01 are the same. I finally did my first 8X burn on my 708a with the TDK 4X discs. It burned the full DVD movie in 8:13. The disc even closed correctly. I used Nero 5.5.10.54 and Firmware 1.03. It’s only 1 disc but I never got an 8X burn with Memorex 4X in 17 tries, I did get 7 coasters though. All of the burns (25 of them) that I did with both DVD+R and -R Optorite and DVD-R Princo CompUsa branded discs worked great with all firmware revisions from 1.00 to 1.03. The DVD-R, both Optorite and Princo 1X burn at 2X speed. Also all the DVD+RW and -RW burns all worked with CompUsa/Optorite discs. Only when I started using the Memorex 4X did I start to have any trouble. By the way this is a very helpful forum.
